Marauders Beat the Darkness to Sweep ESU

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Millersville, Pa. - After winning the PSAC Eastern Division opener against East Stroudsburg 5-3, Millersville scored two runs in the top of the 10th and beat the setting sun to edge the Warriors 9-7 for a doubleheader sweep Friday afternoon.

Two years ago, Millersville (13-6, 2-0 PSAC East) and East Stroudsburg (12-5, 0-2 PSAC East) played to a draw at Cooper Park, and game two was heading in that direction after the Warriors erased a 5-1 deficit in sixth and again rallied with two runs to tie the game at 7-7 in the eighth.

Millersville, playing as the road team on its home field, capitalized on Mark Stuckey's leadoff walk in the 10th. Stuckey promptly swiped second base and reached third after a fielding error on Chas McCormick's sacrifice bunt attempt. With runners on the corners, Tyler Orris delivered a line drive single to left. McCormick reached third on a Zach Stone flyout. On the first pitch to Tyler McDonald, Orris swiped second, but ESU catcher Eric Forth tried to pick McCormick off third. His throw sailed into right field, allowing Millersville's ninth run to cross home.

McCormick went 4-for-5 with three RBIs, and Dan Johnson went 4-for-5 with a run scored. Stone totaled three hits. As a team, Millersville totaled a season-high 17 hits. Johnson had a banner day at the plate, totaling seven hits in the two games.

Millersville closer Adam Zipko (1-0), who earned also earned the save in game one, threw a career-high five innings and 74 pitches to get the win.

Zipko pitched one more inning that starter Brandon Miller. Miller worked into the fifth, but after back-to-back singles, the Marauders called on Matt Binder. With the Marauders leading 5-1, East Stroudsburg pushed both runs home and added two more credited to Binder in the sixth to send the game into extra innings.

Millersville jumped on top in the eighth with a two-run single from McCormick. Zipko couldn't hold the lead, though, as Nick Espino drove in two with a single. However, Zipko kept Millersville in the game. ESU loaded the bases with one out but Zipko struck out Mike Tenaglia and got John Armbrust to fly out.

Millersville started the ninth with singles from McDonald and Johnson but could not score. Zipko retired the last six Warriors he faced.

While game one had its own drama, it paled in comparison to game two. Johnson, who had three hits in game one and totaled seven in the doubleheader, scored on an ESU error after leading off the second with a double.

Millersville starter Chris Murphy (5-1) entered the game with 23 consecutive scoreless innings and need just five more to set a PSAC record. His streak came to an end in the bottom of the second when Ian Allen singled home Nico Delerme, who started the inning with a walk.

The Marauder bats responed with a four-run, four-hit inning. A 5-1 lead was plenty for Murphy. He gave up another run in the sixth and an unearned run in the seventh, but Zipko came to Millersville's rescue. With the tying run on first base, Zipko snared a comeback liner off the bat of Drew Hercik to end the game.

Murphy worked 6.2 innings, allowing two earned runs on eight hits. He struck out six and walked one. Ryan Lubreski (3-1) took the loss for ESU after allowing five runs--four earned--in five innings.

Millersville and East Stroudsburg return to Cooper Park on Saturday for another PSAC East twinbill. First pitch is 1 p.m.
