Baseball Can't Thaw Out Offense in Season Opener

Box Score Winston-Salem, N.C. - Millersville baseball spent its entire preseason in frigid temperatures with snow piled on the field. And despite the trip to North Carolina for warmer temperatures, the Marauder offense remained frozen solid in Friday's 4-1 season-opening loss to Winston-Salem State.

Millersville (0-1) has now lost eight of the last 10 season openers. Millersville managed six hits but could not take advantage of four Winston-Salem State (1-2) errors. The lone run crossed the plate in the top of the ninth with Kurt Seiders singled in freshman Chas McCormick. Seiders finished with two singles. Zach Stone, the reigning PSAC East Player of the Year and conference on base percentage leader, started his 2014 season in similar fashion, reaching base in each of his first three at bats with two singles and a walk.

The 2013 PSAC East and Atlantic Region Pitcher of the Year Chris Murphy (0-1) surrendered three early runs before finding his groove. Connor Andrus put the Rams on the board in the bottom of the first with a RBI double. Andrus delivered a two-run double in the third to give his club a 3-0 lead.

Millersville stranded at least one runner in six inning. The best scoring opportunity came in the eighth when Seiders started the inning with a single. Dan Johnson and Tyler McDonald were both hit by pitches, filling the bases with one out. Winston-Salem State called on Devin McLemore to put out the fire, and he forced Dan Stoltzfus to ground in to an inning ending double play.

The Marauders threatened again in the seventh with McCormick reaching on an error and Tyler Orris drawing a walk. Seiders followed with his RBI single. Stone represented the game-tying run, but McLemore escaped with his first save of the season when Stone flew out to center field.

Wesley Halsabeck (1-0) pitched six shutout innings, striking out four and walking one while scattering four hits. After giving up three runs in the first three innings, Murphy posted zeros in the next three innings. He scattered six hits and walked two while striking out five. Logan Grant was credited with allowing one run in 1.1 innings. Matt Binder pitched two-thirds of an inning and allowed in an inherited run.

Millersville and Winston-Salem State play game two of the three-game series on Saturday.
