Johnstown, Pa. - Millersville wrestlers enter each season with the ultimate goal of qualifying for the NCAA Division II Championships. That goal can be realized this weekend at the two-day NCAA Super Region 1 Championships hosted by Pitt-Johnstown.
Of the 12 teams and 10 wrestlers per weight class, only the top three teams and the top three wrestlers in each weight class advanced to the national championships. And Super Region 1 is loaded with the nation's No. 1-ranked team (Notre Dame College) and 13 nationally-ranked wrestlers.
"Last season the top four teams advanced and this year it will only be the top three due to some team changes in the region," said Millersville head coach Todd Roberts. "There are four teams in our region that are nationally ranked and one of them is No. 1. That makes for some pretty big obstacles to get past."
Millersville posted a 3-6 record against Super Region 1 teams this year and on the individual level, 141-pound David Charles and 197-pound Aram Moffitt have been ranked in the region much of the season. Charles was ranked fourth in the last poll, and Moffitt was ranked sixth. Moffitt leads the team with a 17-13 record and Charles is 15-13 with a team-best seven major decisions.
"My expectation for these guys are to wrestle hard all seven minutes," said Roberts. "They will need to be aggressive and finish their shots fast and cleanly. Only the top three wrestlers advance to the national tournament, and they can do it but will need to wrestle at their peak."
Charles may have the best shot of any Marauder to qualify. He is used to wrestling for three full periods, having not been pinned this year, and he boasts a 10-3 record against wrestlers from Super Region 1. His two biggest obstacles are Mercyhurst's Dylan D'Urso and Notre Dame's Maurice Miller. Miller is ranked second in the nation and D'Urso is seventh. Charles has not faced Miller this season but is 0-2 against D'Urso, losing by a 6-0 score at the PSAC Championships and by a 12-2 major decision in the dual meet.
Moffitt has the most wins by a Marauder freshman since Mike Greck's 18 in 2006-07. He went 4-6 against regional starters this season.
One darkhorse to watch is Anthony White if he is in the lineup at 149 pounds. There are no nationally-ranked wrestlers in the bracket and the field is wide open. White is 2-2 in limited action with the Marauders but won 26 matches a couple of years ago at Clarion.
As a senior, Zach Pincus has one more shot at qualifying. Pincus finished sixth at the Super Region 1 Championships as a junior and has experience against some of the top wrestlers in the class including third-ranked Braden Turner from East Stroudsburg. Pincus has won just two of his last nine bouts but took Turner in the sudden victory period in the Feb. 6 dual.
A number of Marauders will receive their first taste of collegiate postseason competition. Freshman Austin Camacci (125) is one of them and was a respectable 5-6 in dual competition. He also led the team with three pins.
While the odds may be stacked against the Marauders, Roberts is quick to point out that in wrestling, victory or defeat can happen almost instantly.
"In wrestling anything can happen," said Roberts. "In almost every match a wrestler will have an opportunity to put his opponent on his back. He just has to be ready to take advantage of that split second opportunity and finish the match with a pin."
Session I begins on Saturday at 11 a.m. and includes the first round, quarterfinals and first and second round of consolation matches. Session II begins at 10 a.m. on Sunday and features the semifinals, consolation quarterfinals and consolation semifinals. Session III, which includes the championship and consolation finals begins at 2 p.m.
Tickets are $7 for adults, $4 for students and senior citizens per session. Children under 10-years-of-age will be admitted free. Tickets can only be purchased per session. All-tournament passes are not available.
