Box Score Shippensburg, Pa. – Head coach
Mary Fleig said it felt like a playoff environment prior to the regular season finale against Shippensburg, and Millersville played like it in a 74-63 victory over the Raiders Wednesday night in Heiges Field House. With the win, the Marauders clinched a No. 4 seed in the PSAC Tournament and a first round home game against fifth-seeded East Stroudsburg on Saturday at 1 p.m.
Â
Millersville (15-11, 10-6 PSAC East) made 33 field goals--the most since Nov. 20 of 2011 against Slippery Rock (34) and tied a season-high in assists with 19. The Marauders also outrebounded Shippensburg (17-9, 11-5 PSAC East) 49-29 and shot 47.8 percent from the field to just 38.7 percent by the Raiders. Shippensburg made just seven free throws, which tied the season-low for a Millersville opponent this season and its 14 attempted free throws are the lowest for any 2013-14 opponent. The Raiders fell to just 1-6 on the season when held below 70 points.
Â
Carly Gallagher didn't find the scoring column for the first time in 67 career games on Feb. 19 against Cheyney after she left in the first half with a foot injury. She then missed her first game of the season against Lock Haven last Saturday and was determined to come back and help in a big way. The redshirt junior did just that in career game No. 68 by scoring a personal-best 30 points and became the first Marauder to do so since
Mashira Newman poured in 30 on Feb. 23, 2011 in Pucillo Gymnasium. That was against guess who? Shippensburg. In her first game coming off the bench since Feb. 9 of last season against West Chester (2 points) Gallagher made a career-best 12 field goals in 18 attempts including 2-of-4 from behind the arc and sunk four of her five free throw attempts to go with eight rebounds and three assists.
Â
It was business as usual for
Celeste Robinson who tallied 17 points on an efficient 8-for-11 from the field. Robinson added seven rebounds, five assists and one block.
Yasmin Cooper was the third and final Marauder in double figures with 12 points and 11 rebounds while registering her ninth career double-double and the fifth in her last eight games. Cooper was 6-of-11 from the floor with two assists and a steal.
Â
Millersville opened the game on a 22-9 run over the first nine minutes and 44 seconds and the Marauders were 10-of-16 from the field during that span. Gallagher and Robinson fueled the run with seven points apiece. Shippensburg made just four of 13 field goal attempts in the same stretch but as they would prove, no lead was safe in this game.
Â
The Raiders answered with a 22-6 run to take a 31-28 advantage with just 47 seconds to go until the intermission. Shippensburg made eight of its 18 shot attempts and turned the ball over only once during the furious comeback. From that point until the 11:24 mark of the second half, Millersville embarked on a 28-9 run and had its biggest lead of the game at 56-40. Gallagher dropped 13 and
Senada Mehmedovic scored seven of her nine points during a span in which the Marauders were 12-for-24 from the field with a lone turnover.
Â
The Raiders weren't done though and drilled three straight triples that cut the margin to seven, 56-49. The home team came within seven points three more times but couldn't get any closer than that. Millersville pushed its lead to 15, 70-55, en route to the 11-point decision.
Â
The Marauders outscored Shippensburg 26-17 off turnovers, 23-14 on second-chance opportunities, 34-13 in bench scoring, and 46-24 in the paint. The game was a clean one and saw a combined 29 personal fouls, the lowest for any Millersville game this season and the Raiders' 11 were the lowest for a Millersville opponent in 2013-14.
Â
The Marauders will begin play in their 18th consecutive PSAC Tournament on Saturday against East Stroudsburg with tip set for 1 p.m. in Pucillo Gymnasium. Millersville and the Warriors split the regular season series with one win each.
