Bald Eagles Swoop into Pucillo and Steal Win from Marauders

Box Score Millersville, Pa. - Saturday afternoon at Pucillo Gymnasium, Millersville couldn't overcome 56 percent shooting from visiting Lock Haven, dropping its Senior Day matchup with the Bald Eagles by a score of 85-72. The loss drops the homestanding Marauders back to .500 at 12-12 and a game back of Lock Haven in the PSAC East standings at 8-7 in divisional play.

Brandon Brown shouldered the scoring load for Millersville, hitting for 18 points on 6-of-11 shooting and added a trio of rebounds and steals. Brown's season-best point total wasn't nearly enough to make up for the Marauders shooting 15.4 percent (4-of-26) from downtown as a team. Five players attempted at least two 3-pointers without a make. The only other Millersville player to reach double digits was Kelvin Parker, who scored just 10 points and missed all six of his attempts from deep.

Lock Haven's attack was powered by Wali Hepburn, who poured in a game-high 21 points, including a perfect 9-of-9 from the charity stripe. The defense for the Bald Eagles fueled their offense, forcing Millersville to shoot just 37.3 percent from the field and only 28.6 percent in the first half. Three other Lock Haven players also found their way into double figures.

Out of the locker rooms, both teams had trouble finding the net, as the game went into the first media break tied at just two. Coming back from that first break, Millersville and Lock Haven both seemed to find their legs as the pace quickened. The Bald Eagles soared out of the timeout to grab a 20-11 lead with an 18-2 run before the Marauders answered with a 9-2 run of their own, closing the gap back to two points with just over nine minutes remaining before half on Kyle Richardson's 3-pointer.

In a game of runs, the home team thought it had made headway with its 9-2 run. Lock Haven had other plans, swelling its lead back to nine by the break. Millersville scored just five more points over the next 8-plus minutes as the away team put the clamps on defensively. Two free throws from Jalen Lester and a layup from Ryan Aker finished the Marauder scoring for the first half.

The second half tortured the Marauders. Lock Haven never let Millersville get closer than four, but never got its own lead farther than 14 points. That arm-length lead and the Bald Eagles' stingy defense frustrated the Marauders into 1-for-10 shooting from 3-point range over the game's final 20 minutes. The home team was led to think it was closing the gap several times, including using a 14-5 run capped by a pair of freebies by Brown to make Lock Haven's lead four.

That four point lead was as close as the road team allowed it to get for the home counterparts. Sixteen seconds later, Haven's Elijah Cooper nailed a triple that pushed the lead back up to seven and extinguished Millersville's hopes of a comeback.

Saturday's loss by Millersville guarantees them the No. 5 seed in the upcoming PSAC Tournament, which begins next Saturday. The defeat also sets up a rematch for the Marauders and Bald Eagles in the first round of the tourney. Before that game, Millersville wraps up its regular season Wednesday at Shippensburg in an 8 p.m. tip time.
