Barton Gets Win No. 20 as Marauders Take Two From Chowan

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Murfreesboro, N.C. - Millersville baseball pushed its winning streak to four games with Monday's doubleheader sweep of Chowan by scores of 5-3 and 9-2.

The top of Millersville's (4-1) pitching rotation, Chris Murphy (1-1) and Tad Barton (1-0), surrendered only one earned run in each game. Barton scored the 20th win of his Millersville career and became just the fifth Marauder to hit the milestone. He is just two victories shy of tying the school record.

Millersville trailed 2-0 in the opener but stormed back for a 5-3 win. The Marauders scored early and often in the nightcap. The lead was pushed to 13-2 after the top of the seventh, but the game was called in the bottom of the inning because of darkness, so the four runs scored in the top of the inning were wiped off the board.

Freshman Chas McCormick turned in a career day at the plate, reaching base five times in the twinbill. He totaled two hits with a double and triple, scored three runs and walked three times. Tyler Orris swiped four bases on the day.

The team is also off to a 4-1 start for the second time in the last three seasons.

The Marauders travel to its home away from home in Williamston, N.C. for three games from Feb. 21-Feb. 23. The Marauders started the Riverside Spring Classic in 2010 and it has been on the schedule since. Tiffin, Le Moyne and Indiana (Pa.) are the Marauders' three weekend opponents.

GAME ONE RECAP
Millersville fell behind early after Chowan scored two runs on two Marauder errors in the second inning. Orris recorded the first of his two RBIs with a single that scored McCormick in the third. Millersville completely erased the the deficit with a four-run fourth.

Tyler McDonald jump-started the rally by drawing a walk, and Mark Stuckey followed with a double. McCormick loaded the bases with a walk, and all three runners moved up on a wild pitch. David Pine eventually worked a walk to again load the bases, and Orris plated his second run with a RBI ground out. Kurt Seiders put Millersville in front by two with a RBI single. Orris raced home on a wild pitch for the team's fifth run.

The lead was plenty for Murphy as he worked three 1-2-3 innings. The only earned run he allowed came in the fifth when Chowan swiped home on a double steal. All four of the hits he allowed were singles. He struck out two, walked one and hit one batter.

The Marauder bullpen of Matt Binder and Adam Zipko were lights out. Binder recorded a pair of strikeouts in two-thirds of an inning. He handed the ball to Zipko, who registered his second save of the season with 1.1 innings and two strikeouts.

Millersville, which committed just two errors in the first three games, was able to overcome four errors in the opener. Seiders led the Marauders at the plate with two hits. Zach Stone was held hitless but did reach base with the 45th hit-by-pitch of his career.

GAME TWO RECAP
After being limited to five hits in the opener, Millersville posted nine runs on nine hits and nine walks in the nightcap. Six different Marauders drew a walk and three drew two. Seven players recorded a hit including two apiece from Stone and Dan Stoltzfus. Stoltzfus and Stone also both drove in two runs.

Stone went 2-for-3, drew a walk and scored three runs. One of his two hits was Millersville's first home run of the season. His two-run blast came as part of a three-run second inning.

Millersville scored one run in each of the first five innings and added four more in the seventh for good measure. Those runs, however, were taken off the board when the game was called in the bottom of the inning because of darkness. By rule, the score reverts to the last completed inning.

Millersville chased Chowan starter George Mazza (0-2) after putting up six runs on five hits and six walks in three innings. Eight of the nine runs scored were earned.

Barton, whose career record improved to 20-7 with the win, scattered four hits and a walk over four innings of work. Four Marauder relievers combined to throw three innings. Logan Grant pitched a scoreles sixth inning.
