Kutztown Uses Big Second Half Run to Pull Past Millersville

Box Score Kutztown, Pa. – Kutztown used a big second half run to down Millersville 77-67 Saturday afternnon in Keystone Arena, avenging an earlier season loss to the Marauders.
 
The Golden Bears (9-14, 6-7 PSAC East) have now beaten Millersville (12-11, 7-6 PSAC East) just four times dating back to the 2001-02 season with all four of those wins coming at Kutztown. After shooting 46.2 percent (12-of-26) in the first half, the Marauders made only nine of their 39 field goal attempts (23.1 percent) in the second stanza.
 
Carly Gallagher led all scorers with 20 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the floor including 2-for-3 from behind the arc and 8-of-14 at the charity stripe. The redshirt junior also had five rebounds and one assist before fouling out late in the second half. Gallagher has scored 20 or more points in two of her last three games.
 
Alexis Martin was the next Marauder in double-figures with 14 points, six rebounds and one steal. Yasmin Cooper earned the seventh double-double of her career with 11 points and 10 rebounds to go with two assists.
 
Out of the intermission, Millersville earned its biggest lead of the game at five points, 41-36. However, Kutztown answered with a 27-8 run and earned its largest advantage of 14, 63-49. During that stretch, the Golden Bears were 7-of-11 from the floor and 12-for-13 at the free throw line. The Marauders managed to make just three of their 14 field goal attempts through the same span.
 
Millersville wasn't finished, though, and answered with an 11-3 run of its own to pull within six, 66-60. The run was fueled by four of Martin's 14 points and five of Kutztown's 13 second half turnovers. The Marauders couldn't get any closer than that though and the Golden Bears led by six on three more occasions en route to the 10-point outcome.
 
The first half was a tightly contested one that saw nine ties and eight lead changes. The two teams' offenses played well and shot a combined 27-of-56 (48.2 percent) from the floor including 7-for-13 from behind the arc. The biggest lead that either team captured was four points and Millersville headed into the locker rooms with a 38-36 advantage.

The Marauders return home to take on Cheyney Wednesday at 6 p.m. in Pucillo Gymnasium. The Wolves knocked off Millersville 61-60 back on Jan. 18, but head coach Mary Fleig has never lost to Cheyney inside the friendly confines (24-0).
