Millersville, Pa. - Millersville redshirt senior Zach Stone just continues to hit and get on base. The Marauder opened his season with six hits in the first three games and was selected on Tuesday as the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Atlantic Region Hitter of the Week.
As the regional hitter of the week, Stone will now be placed on the national ballot. In the three game series against Winston-Salem State, Stone went 6-for-13 at the plate with at least one hit in each game. Stone also drew two walks to post a .533 on base percentage.
Stone went 2-for-4 with a walk in the season opener, and followed that effort with three hits and a walk in the game two victory. Stone drove in his first run of the season in the eighth inning of game three. This came while playing a new defensive position. After starting 58 games at first base in 2013, Stone started all three games of 2014 in left field.
His six-hit weekend pushed him higher up the Millersville career record books. He now stands in fourth place on the career hits list and is just four hits from becoming the fourth player with 200 hits. He trails all-time leader Derek Kline by 51. Stone also needs just 24 RBIs and 18 doubles for school records in those categories.
The most impressive number of Stone's hitting career could very well be his strikeout totals. In 625 plate appearances, Stone has struck out just 39 times. In each of his first three seasons, he has been hit by more pitches than times he has struck out. In comparison, Stone has drawn 62 walks and been plunked 44 times.
