Millersville Depth Chart |
Cheyney Depth ChartGAME OVERVIEW• Millersville travels to Cheyney on Saturday with both teams looking for its first win. After several weeks with injuries hampering the offense, the Marauders seem to be healthy heading into this week's game. Quarterback
Matt Misley is expected to start and play extensively after playing only six snaps against Lock Haven and missing the Shippensburg game.
Myron Myles returned to the lineup last week with 112 rushing yards.
• Millersville is averaging 14.4 points per game, but Cheyney's offense has managed only 7.2 points per game and has scored nine touchdowns in nine games. It was shut out four times this season and in two of the last three weeks. The Wolves scored a season-high 21 points on Oct. 11 against East Stroudsburg. The Marauders, however, have scored at least two touchdowns in six games. Millersville will certainly look to get its ground game going against a defense that has allowed 230.1 yards per game.
• Millersville's defense has generated at least one interception in each of the last four weeks and has totaled six caused turnovers in the last four games. The Marauders rank 11th in the PSAC with eight picks. The defense has generated at least one turnover in eight of nine games.
P.J. Santos has three picks in the last four weeks. The Marauders have the ability to run the ball effectively. It rushed for 214 yards and averaged 5.4 yards per carry against Shippensburg last week. Myles recorded his first 100-yard game and needed just six carries to do it. True freshman
Phil Vass has been productive in his two appearances. His 82 yards on 18 carries equates to a 4.6 yards per carry average. He has had a run of at least 16 yards in both games.
• When Millersville is on offense, Misley should have time to throw. After surrendering just one sack against Bloomsburg and East Stroudsburg, Millersville has allowed 11.0 sacks in the last two games. Cheyney, however, has managed just six sacks this year.
• Millersville will need to win field position and produce in the return game as special teams have been an issue for Cheyney with an average punt of 30.0 yards and a miss on its only field goal attempt. Marauder return specialists like
Cimirrow Moat, who had two returns for an average of 31.5 against Shippensburg last week may be able to make plays against a kickoff coverage unit that ranks last in the league in kickoff distance and net average.
David Coates' return opportunities were limited in previous weeks because of injuries to the running back position but with
Myron Myles and
Phil Vass both healthy, Coates may see more opportunities in kick return.
SERIES HISTORY• Millersville holds a commanding 57-5-1 record in the all-time series and has won 29 of the last 30 games. Cheyney knocked off the Marauders by a 20-17 score in 2010 and Millersville squeaked by with a 10-7 win in 2011, but over the last two years, Millersville has outscored the Wolves by a 65-12 margin. Millersville has scored at least 30 points in all but three games since 1990. Since 1968, Millersville has posted a 22-1 record in games played at Cheyney. Cheyney's last home win over the Marauders came by a 17-0 score in 1978.
THE LAST MEETING (MILLERSVILLE 30, CHEYNEY 12 - OCT. 19, 2013)•
Ian Sadon and the Millersville ground game dictated play from start to finish and scores on their first three drives led the Marauders to a 30-12 road win over Cheyney. Sadon rushed for a career-high 134 yards and two touchdowns on 20 carries, and
David Coates added a 42-yard touchdown run as Millersville piled up a season-high 181 yards rushing and three rushing touchdowns. Millersville led 28-0 before Cheyney got on the board in the fourth quarter.
SCOUTING CHEYNEY• Anthony Johnson is in his first season as the head coach after serving as the program's offensive coordinator since 2010. The Wolves are led by All-PSAC East First Team linebacker Isaiah Fleming, who has received some NFL Draft buzz after leading the league in tackles last season. Fleming is back at it this season, totaling a league-best 12.3 tackles per game including a league-best 54 solo stops. He ranks eighth in the nation in solo stops and 10th in total tackles. Jamil Williams is a playmaker in the secondary, ranking second in the PSAC with four interceptions.
• The offense is led by running back Khalil Rodgers with 310 rushing yards and 4.0 yards per carry. Quarterback Mike Campbell has completed 47.8 percent of his passes and has been turnover prone, throwing eight picks to four touchdowns. Campbell can hurt teams with his legs, though. He has totaled 174 yards in gains this season.
SWAT TEAM• Special teams coordinator
George Love is building a field goal kick blocking juggernaut at Millersville. The Marauders led all of Division II in blocked kicks in 2013 and they are back to No. 1 in the nation this week after swatting three kicks against Shippensburg. The Marauders have blocked 10 kicks. The duo of
Trenton Petrovich and
Neil Moloney are tough to handle up the middle. Petrovich has blocked six while Moloney has put a paw on three. Petrovich is tied for first in Division II in blocked kicks and Moloney is tied for seventh. Petrovich has totaled 10 blocked kicks in the last two seaso
