Millersville Depth Chart |
Shippensburg Depth ChartGAME OVERVIEW• Millersville hosts Shippensburg for its 2014 home finale. The Marauders send off its senior class of 15, which includes team captains
Reggie Slaton,
Trenton Petrovich and
Matt Misley. Slaton and tackle
Kevin Bohl are the elder statesmen of the group, having started 34 and 36 games respectively. Slaton is a two-time team captain--one of only 10 total and one of only three linebackers since 1956. Classmate
David Coates will close his career not just in the Millersville record books but also in the Division II records. He set Marauder career records for kick return yards and kickoff returns and will finish second in Division II history in both categories.
• Millersville's defense has improved significantly in the last two games, allowing 26.0 points per game against East Stroudsburg and Lock Haven after allowing 50.6 points per game over the first six weeks. Against Lock Haven, the Marauders totaled a season-high 22 first downs and held Lock Haven to a Millersville best 14. The Marauders also out-gained Lock Haven by a 321-274 margin. It was the first time Millersville had surpassed 300 yards of offense since piling up 503 in the season opener. The 274 yards was the fewest allowed this season. The Marauder defense has picked off four passes in the last three weeks, including two against Lock Haven.
P.J. Santos has picked off a pass in each of the last three games.
• Millersville's defense will have to be stout against a Raider offense that ranks first in the PSAC in total offense (509.4) and first in rushing offense (241.0). The Raiders average 5.0 yards per carry and boast a league-leading 383 carries. Shippensburg attempted only five passes last week against Cheyney while carrying the ball 70 times for 390 yards. Running back Justin Pyle attempted more passes (2-for-3) than quarterback Chris Lawshe (0-for-1). Lawshe has battled through an injury to stay in the lineup. When healthy, Lawshe threw for over 300 yards five times and attempted 40-plus passes four weeks in a row before the Cheyney game.
SERIES HISTORY• Shippensburg has won 10 consecutive games since 2001 and has won the last five at Biemesderfer Stadium. The last time Millersville won on its home turf against the Raiders was in 2000 by a 27-19 score. Shippensburg has scored 40-plus points in four of the last five games while Millersville has totaled just 30 points in the last four games. Last season's game was also at Biemesderfer Stadium, and Shippensburg rolled to a 48-10 win behind five touchdown passes from Zach Zulli. Millersville trailed just 13-3 late in the first half but Trevor Harman caught a 59-yard pass with 14 seconds just before the half.
SCOUTING THE SHIPPENSBURG• Blair Brooks has emerged as one of the top running backs in the PSAC. His 113.1 yards per game ranks fourth. His 6.6 yards per carry average is fourth-best. Trevor Harman is among the most productive pass catchers in PSAC history. The 2013 All-America First Team pick has piled up 295 catches, 3,938 yards and 58 TD catches in his career, including 22 last season.
• Shippensburg is vulnerable against the pass. It ranks 15th in the PSAC, allowing 322.4 passing yards per game and has surrendered 22 touchdowns to just five interceptions. The top tackler is linebacker Brian Sourber (7.8 per game). Sourber is returning home in a way, as he is a Lancaster native and graduate of Manheim Township. He was All-PSAC East First Team as a junior and a second team pick as a freshman and sophomore. A year after defensive end Jake Metz totaled 11 sacks and 18 tackles for loss by himself, the entire Millersville defense has just eight sacks in 2014.
CATCHING ON• The Marauders have started two true freshmen wide receivers in each of the first eight games and fellow freshman
Evan Brooks joined
Kevin Wiggins and
Malont'a Patterson in the last four weeks. Wiggins leads the team in catches with 30 and Patterson leads the team in receiving yards with 358. No true freshman has ever led the Marauders in catches or receiving yards. Wiggins (4) and Patterson (3) have also combined for seven of Millersville's 10 touchdown catches this season.
SEARCHING FOR STABILITY• In 2013,
Ian Sadon was the workhorse for the Marauders, piling up over 1,000 yards rushing. In 2014, it has been a revolving door at running back because of injuries. Four different running backs have at least 11 carries, but no back has more than 74. By comparison, the leading rusher in the PSAC, Brock Jones of Gannon, has 196 carries.
David Coates is Millersville's leader in carries and he ranks 24th in the PSAC. He also leads the team with 248 yards rushing. Three backs have 198 or more rushing yards and quarterbacks
Matt Misley (208) and
J.J. Paige (117) have accounted for nearly 30 percent of the team's rushing yards. Myles opened the season with 52 totes in the first four games but has totaled just three carries for two yards since Sept. 27.
IN ON THE ACTION• Safety
P.J. Santos is displaying a knack for finding the football. Santos recovered a fumble in each of the first two games of the season and has picked off a pass in three consecutive games. They were the first three picks of his career. He now ranks third on the team with 57 tackles and has totaled 12 stops in a game twice this season.
