Vazquez Fuels Victory Over Philadelphia in Opener

Box Score Millersville, Pa. - Sophomore Jaime Vazquez scored two goals in the span of two minutes to lift Millersville to a 3-1 victory over Philadelphia in the Marauders home and season opener.

Millersville (1-0) moved to 6-0-1 in season openers under head coach Steve Widdowson with the win over the Rams. Vazquez scored his goals in the 54th and 56th minutes. Fellow classmate Jeramey Robbins assisted Vazquez's first goal and netted the Marauders' only other score in the game. Sophomore Ben Johnston and captain Andrew Dukes also tallied assists for Millersville. In goal, Brad Benzing made one save and many impact plays to help preserve the win.

Philadelphia (0-1) only mustered 10 shots against the Black and Gold defense throughout the entire contest. Jonathon Fredericks recorded the Rams only goal while Ishmaiah Calwrie led Philadelphia with three shots. Goalie Thomas Attamante notched four saves in the loss.

A rather dull first half saw Millersville get off to a slow start as Phildelphia controlled possesion for the first few minutes of the season. The Marauders heated up as play progressed and finished the half taking six more shots than the visitors, but the teams were still in a 0-0 deadlock.

Widdowson's halftime speech must have sparked the Marauder attack in the second half.

Dukes and sophomore Zach Brier each had shots saved by defensivemen at the goal line to temporarily thwart the Marauder attack in the beginning of the final frame.

A little under 10 minutes into the second half, Vazquez and Robbins played a beautiful give-and-go near the top left side of the box. Vazquez quickly turned off of his teammates pass and took two quick touches before beating Attamante with a shot to the right. The crowd of 200-plus in attendance roared in excitement of the Marauders first goal of the year and Vazquez's celebration flip after scoring.

A breakaway by Dukes only a minute later forced the Philadelphia defense to collapse on the three-time All-Atlantic selection. Dukes, who led the PSAC in assists last year, directed a pass right across the face of the goal towards a trailing Vazquez. The Bernville native played a driven ball to the left side of the goal to put the home team up 2-0 early in the second period.

Fredericks' goal in the 74th minute for the Rams place more pressure on Widdowson and company as their lead dropped to only one.

With 10 minutes to play Johnston took the ball down the right wing and into the Philadelphia defensive third. A long cross by the sophomore came to the feet of Dukes, who let the ball pass through to the left side to a wide open Robbins. Robbins buried his shot and secured the win and 3-1 result.

The Millersville victory avenges a 1-0 loss the team suffered to the Rams last season. It also improves Widdowson's record to 4-2 against Philadelphia.

Under Widdowson's direction, Millersville is undeafeted in season openers and has outscored its foes 20-6 in those games.

Millersville travels to West Virginia Wesleyan on Sunday, before returning home for another non-conference game on Wednesday, Sept. 11 against Holy Family. Game time is slated for 4 p.m.
