Ben Johnston scored his second goal of the year in the 104th minute in Friday evening's showdown with Gannon, giving the Millersville men's soccer team a 2-1 double overtime win over the Golden Knights.
As the second overtime period began Gannon took two quick shots but a save by Marauder goalkeeper
Brad Benzing and a misfire by the Golden Knights kept the Marauders in the game. Moments later Johnston knocked in a rebound attempt and lifted the Black and Gold to its first win over Gannon since 2010.
Millersville (4-2-1, 1-0 PSAC) picked up its first conference win of the season and avenged last year's 3-0 loss to Gannon. Johnston also assisted on the Marauders other goal, which was scored by classmate
Jeramey Robbins. Robbins now leads the team with 12 points and is tied for third in the PSAC in the same category.
Jaime Vazquez led Millersville with seven shots, and Benzing made a season-high five saves in the win.
Gannon (2-5, 1-2 PSAC) had trouble creating opportunities against the Marauder defense, totaling just 10 shots throughout the 104 minutes of play. Alex Perri scored the Golden Knights only goal of the game in the third minute off of a pass from Skhosi Mgobozi. Goalie Matt Dixon recorded seven saves in the loss.
Perri's goal in the third minute put the pressure on the Marauders early, but the visitor's responded 20 minutes later.
Robbins scored his third goal of the season on an excellent pass by Johnston to tie the game up at one in the 23rd minute. Robbins has now recorded either a goal or assist in every one of the Marauders' games this year.
Millersville kept the pressure on throughout regulation and controlled play. The Marauders outshot the Golden Knights 11-3 in the second half and limited the home team without a corner kick in the final 45 minutes of regulation.
In the first overtime the Black and Gold fired three targets and did not surrender any shots, but still were not able to breakthrough with a golden goal.
When Johnston finally scored in the 104th minute it gave the Marauders there first overtime win of the season and first since last year's 2-1 overtime win over Slippery Rock.
The Millersville attack tallied 25 shots and has now registered 20 or more targets in three games this year. On the defensive side of the ball, the Marauders held the Golden Knights to just 10 shots and have now limited opponents to 10 or fewer shots in five of their seven matches.
Millersville hopes to carry the momentum from the win into Saturday as the team takes on No. 12 Mercyhurst at 4:30 p.m.
