Box Score Millersville, Pa. - A second half surge by the Millersville men's soccer team fell just short as No. 2 LIU Post held off the Marauder attack to defeat the home team 2-1 on Saturday afternoon.
Down 2-0 in the second half, Millersville senior
Andrew Dukes scored on a beautiful pass from
Jeramey Robbins to cut the Pioneers lead to one in the 52nd minute.
18 minutes later Dukes found the back of the net again on a header from 12 yards away. Unfortunately for the Marauders, Dukes was called offsides on the play and the Black and Gold still trailed by a score, instead of being even with LIU Post with 20-minutes remaining.
Millersville took three shots and three corners in the final 10-mintues of play, but the Pioneers withstood the pressure and left Biemsderfer Stadium with the victory.
Millersville (3-2-1) finished the match with a 14-13 edge in shots and 7-6 lead in corner kicks. Dukes' score in the 52nd minute was his second of the year, while Robbins increased his conference leading assist total to six.
Brad Benzing grabbed three saves in the loss.
LIU Post (6-0) remains unbeaten and will likely maintain its No. 2 ranking in the nation after collecting another win. Eivind Austboe knocked in his seventh goal of the year, while Tom Bowen scored the Pioneers first goal of the game. Goalkeeper Marco Jorgensen made just two saves in the contest, but a penalty kick save in the 51st minute would help him pick up his sixth win of 2013.
The Pioneers controlled play in the first half, taking five more shots and two more corners than the home team. Bowen notched the first goal of the game on an 18-yard blast that beat Benzing to the left upper 90. Austboe's tally came in the 32nd minute on a header placed right under the crossbar.
The second period was a completely different story.
Aggressive play by both squads resulted in four yellow cards and a red card in the match.
The red card came in the LIU Post box against a Pioneer defender in the 51st minute and setup a penalty kick for Millersville. Dukes took the PK, but an outstretched Jorgensen made the save and kept the Marauders off the board for the time being.
Seconds later, a transition opportunity placed Robbins in a one-on-one scenario with Jorgensen. The sophomore played the ball to his left at the last second and Dukes had an easy finish into an open net to cut the Pioneer lead to 2-1.
The Marauders outpowered LIU Post in the final minutes, but the Black and Gold could not find the back of the goal cage and dropped their second-straight game to a ranked opponent.
The schedule doesn't get easier for Millersville as the men's soccer team travels to Erie next weekend to take on Gannon on Friday, Sept. 27 and No. 12 Mercyhurst on Saturday, Sept 28. Both games are scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
