Miscues Doom Marauders at Mercyhurst

Box Score Erie, Pa. - Brent Collins' career day and Ian Sadon's 108 yards rushing could not overcome four turnovers that dug Millersville an early hole in Saturday's 49-7 loss at Mercyhurst.

Collins set career highs in catches (11) and yards (123), and Sadon pieced together his third 100-yard rushing performance in his last six games. He also scored his first touchdown of the season. Millersville (0-2) totaled 19 first downs to Mercyhurst's (2-0) 20 and held a nearly five-minute edge on time of possession.

Millersville, however, put the ball on the ground four times, losing one fumble. Two field goals were blocked. While the quarterbacks combined to complete 19-of-27 passes, Connor Casey and Curtis Frye were sacked a total of six times for 68 yards in losses, and Casey threw three interceptions. The third of the interceptions was returned 45 yards for a touchdown by Colin Kimball in the third quarter.

Millersville's mistakes snowballed quickly. After 4:22 of playing time and six Mercyhurst offensive plays the Marauders trailed 21-0. Brandon Brown-Dukes, who totaled 142 yards, three touchdowns and averaged 9.5 yards per carry in the game, took the first play from scrimmage 66 yards for a touchdown. David Coates fumbled the ensuing kickoff return, and four plays later, Anthony Vedemia tossed the first of his two TD tosses.

Casey was intercepted four plays into Millersville's next drive by Kimball, who returned it to the Millersville 10. Vendemia needed only one play to find R.J. Miller for a three-score lead.

Millersville's offense capably moved the ball against Mercyhurst's defense. The Marauders pieced together a seven-play, 77-yard drive at the end of the first quarter that included a 30-yard hook-up from Casey to Shane Doughty, and a one-yard TD run from Sadon. At the end of the first half, the Marauders held a 14-9 edge in first downs and had been outgained only by a 209-162 margin. Sadon provided 98 yards in the first half alone. Three turnovers and five penalties for 60 yards proved far too costly.

Collins' 123 receiving yards were the most by a Marauder since Jamal Smith's 164 vs. Shippensburg on Oct. 30, 2010. Collins now has 18 catches in his first two games of 2013 after totaling just five in all of 2012. In three of the five career games in which Sadon has received at least 11 carries, he has totaled at least 100 yards.

Frye made his first career attempts in the game and completed 6-of-9 for 95 yards with a long of 38.

Rasheed Johnson led the defense with seven tackles.

Millersville returns home in week three to host West Chester under the lights at Chryst Field at Biemesderfer Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
