TOURNAMENT OVERVIEW
• Millersville is making a third consecutive appearance in the PSAC Tournament for the first time in school history and is in the postseason for the fourth time in six seasons under
Jon Shehan. The 2013 club posted a 36-14 overall record and an 18-6 PSAC East record to win its second division title in three seasons and its third since 2008. Millersville, with four PSAC Championships all-time (the last came in 1998), has won at least one game in each of its last five trips to the tournament. Shehan's clubs own a 5-6 record.
• There isn't much benefit in seeding for the PSAC East champs as they draw PSAC West No. 4 seed Slippery Rock, which is 31-18 and has spent time in the national rankings. The Rock's No. 1 starter Lou Trivino is as good as any in the PSAC with a 1.53 ERA, .185 batting average against and eight complete games in 11 starts. He ranks third in the PSAC in ERA, second in opponent batting average and third in strikeouts. He is a tough match-up for the Marauders as they lead the PSAC in strikeouts. He has not allowed a single earned run over his last 22 innings pitched. The Rock's lineup is led by the PSAC's batting champ Will Kengor. Kengor posted 18 hits in his last nine games to bat .454 with a .510 on base percentage.
• Millersville knows first hand that seeding matters little in the PSAC Tournament. In 2011, Millersville lost to No. 4 seed Indiana (Pa.) in the opening round. Over the last 13 years, only three No. 1 seeds have won the PSAC Championship but with West Chester (2012, 2009) and Mercyhurst (2011), a No. 1 seed has taken three of the last four crowns. No No. 4 seed has ever won the title and only three No. 3 seeds (Kutztown in 2008, Shippensburg in 2007 and Kutztown in 2005) have won it.
OFFENSIVE ERUPTION
• The Millersville lineup leads the PSAC in runs with 53 more than any other team. It also ranks first in hits, doubles, RBIs, walks and on base percentage. The 2000 club set the standard as the top offensive team in school history, but this year's team is averaging more runs per game (7.22), more RBIs per game (6.46) and just as many hits per game (9.9). Millersville's .323 team average is an incredible jump from last season's .286. Millersville set a PSAC record for runs in a game on April 3 with 40 against Lincoln. The team scored 63 runs in the doubleheader.
SLAMMIN' STONE
• At the forefront of Millersville's tremendous offensive season is redshirt junior
Zach Stone, who posted a .413 batting average to be the first Marauder since Mike Wokulich in 2002 to bat over .400. Stone ranks first in the PSAC in on base percentage, third in hitting, fifth in slugging percentage, fourth in runs, third in hits, fifth in RBIs, third in doubles, seventh in homers and has struck out only 12 times. Stone recently passed Coach Shehan in career doubles with his 42nd and in just three years has 119 RBIs.
• Stone was at his best when it mattered, hitting .450 with eight doubles in league play. He is hitting .433 with runners on base, .354 with runners in scoring position and is almost automatic (16-for-22) with a runner on third and less than two outs. He also posted the second-longest hitting streak in school history with run of 17 during the season. He reached base in 18 consecutive games to start the season and is on a streak of 11.
SPARK PLUG
•
Evan King may be the most important player to Millersville's success. He hit .414 with a .497 on base percentage, 28 RBIs and 41 runs scored in Millersville's 36 wins. In the team's losses, King hit .245 with a .315 on base percentage, scored six runs and drove in one.
THE CAREER OF A KING
• King played two productive seasons before transferring to Millersville, where he has stolen 46 bases in two seasons. He enters the tournament ranked 15th in career hits with 229 and needs two to tie Kutztown's Al Fitch for 14th. He also ranks 17th in games playd (195), 10th in walks (106) and seventh in steals (86). King is one of just two players in PSAC history to steal at least 20 bases in three seasons.
AMAZING MAYZA
• Two-time PSAC East Pitcher of the Week
Tim Mayza has dropped his ERA from 4.40 last season to 1.42 this season. That mark ranks second in the PSAC. He has not allowed more than three runs in any start this season and allowed one or none in 11 of 14. Left-handed hitters batted 7-for-48 (.146) against him in the regular season. His 6.42 hits per game allowed is the best on the team.
WORKING TOWARD PERFECTION
• Two-time NCBWA Division II Pitcher of the Week
Chris Murphy made history in 2013 not only by throwing a no-hitter with 13 strikeouts against Glenville State on Feb. 24, but he also threw just the 18th perfect game in Division II history on March 15 against Philadelphia. He needed only 64 pitches (52 of which were strikes). It was the first perfect game by a PSAC pitcher since 1999.
• Murphy quickly acclimated to life in the PSAC, posting a scoreless innings streak of 25.1 innings at one point. He has set five single-season school records and leads Division II in victories 12. He is currently tied with
Brooks Rothschild for the most innings pitched with 86.2. Murphy is devastating against right-handed hitters, surrendering a .170 batting average against. He has also allowed only 19 two-out hits in 136 at bats. He went 6-0 with a 1.33 ERA against the PSAC Dast.
1-2-3 PUNCH
• Murphy, Mayza and
Tad Barton posted a 15-3 record with a 1.44 ERA and 10 complete games against the PSAC East.
HANDLING THE HOT CORNER
• Third baseman
Tyler McDonald has bumped his average from .245 in 2012 to .354 in 2013. His 15 doubles is third-best in the PSAC. A true clutch hitter, he is hitting .416 with runners on base and .444 with runners in scoring position.
FRESHMEN ORIENTATION
•
Tyler Orris has started all 50 games at shortstop and produced two walk-off RBIs. He has fielded .970 over the last 42 games. He reached base in the first 15 games of his career. Musser is a leading candidate for PSAC East Freshman of the Year, ranking in the PSAC's top 10 in average and runs. He is riding an 11-game hitting streak and has reached base in 15 straight.
