Box Score 2 East Stroudsburg, Pa. - Millersville baseball entered the final doubleheader of the regular season needing one win for the PSAC Eastern Division title. The Marauders got two.
Chris Murphy won for the 12th time this season and the Marauders held off a furious East Stroudsburg rally to win 3-2 in the opener.
Jim McDade produced arguably his best start of the season in the nightcap, helping the Marauders to a 6-3 win and the road sweep.
Millersville (36-14) has won the PSAC East in two of the last three seasons and in three of the six seasons under Coach
Jon Shehan. The 2013 club heads into the PSAC Tournament for a third season in a row and plays the 6:30 p.m. game against No. 4 seeded Slippery Rock on Wednesday, May 8 in Johnstown, Pa. East Stroudsburg (29-16, 13-11 PSAC East) enters as a No. 3 seed.
When the Marauders needed a win to clinch it was only natural that Murphy (12-1), who has been almost unbeatable all season, delivered it. Murphy's complete game was his school record eighth of the season and it tied him with
Brooks Rothschild for the single season innings pitched record (86.2). His 12 wins ties him for third in PSAC history and puts him two behind the record holder.
He threw five shutout innings, scattering eighth hits, striking out eight and walking none. His lineup provided him with early run support in the first when
Jeremy Musser,
Zach Stone and
Dan Johnson hit back-to-back-to-back singles. Johnson's plated Musser for a 1-0 lead.
The advantage grew to 3-0 when
Kurt Seiders drove in Stone. Johnson scored on a
Tyler McDonald sacrifice fly one batter later. East Stroudsburg made the game more than interesting late, though. Mike Tenaglia blasted a solo home run in the sixth for his team's first run. Andy Brandstetter ripped a one-out triple in the seventh, and a ground out pushed him home to cut Millersville's lead to one. A fielding error kept East Stroudsburg alive, and Brian Ernst singled to put runners on the corners. Murphy, however, ended the threat by getting Eric Boyer to fly out.
McDade (3-4) was outstanding in game two. He surrendered just one run over the first five innings and worked into the sixth before handing the ball to
Adam Zipko. It was only the second time this season he lasted longer than five innings.
The Millersville lineup took some pressure off of McDade but scoring early again.
Evan King and Musser led off the first with singles, and King scored on Johnson ground out. ESU committed the fewest errors in the PSAC in 2013, but one in the second opened the door to two unearned runs and a three-run inning.
The Marauders tacked on another in the sixth when
David Pine drove in Seiders. Musser doubled in the seventh and scored following two wild pitches.
Once again ESU pushed late, scoring one in the sixth and an unearned run in the seventh. Chris Knott represented the tying run at the plate in the seventh but Zipko forced a ground out to end the game.
Musser finished the day with four hits--two in each game. King and Seiders both had two hits in game two. Zipko's 1.1 innings of work earned him his seventh save.
Millersville is 5-2 with five consecutive wins against Slippery Rock in PSAC Tournament meetings. More information about Millersville's opening round game in the PSAC Tournament will be posted Monday at
