Box Score 2 Millersville, Pa. - East Stroudsburg played like a desperate team Friday afternoon at Cooper Park. The Warriors took two by scores of 2-0 and 4-3 from No. 20 Millersville, clinching a spot in the PSAC Tournament and keeping Millersville from clinching the PSAC East title on its home field.
Millersville (34-14, 16-6 PSAC) was swept at home for just the second time this season, but it did receive some help from West Chester, which beat Kutztown in game one of its series Friday. Millersville now needs one win or one Kutztown loss Saturday afternoon to notch its third PSAC East title since 2008.
East Stroudsburg receive a lights-out pitching effort from Brian Ernst (4-2) in game one and used one big inning in game two. Ernst struck out 15 and allowed only three base hits in a complete game performance. Ernst also helped himself at the plate with two hits, but it was Chris Knott's solo home run in the second inning that put East Stroudsburg in front.
Tim Mayza (9-3) battled for 6.2 innings. He scattered eight innings and walked a pair but allowed only the one earned run while striking out seven. A second run was credited to him in the seventh when
Pat Kelley induced a grounder that was subsequently thrown high at first base, allowing ESU to take a 2-0 lead.
Millersville truly threatened only once.
Evan King and
Jeremy Musser singled with two outs in the sixth, but Ernst struck out
Zach Stone on a debated third strike that resulted in Coach
Jon Shehan being ejected.
The Marauders jumped on ESU starter Ryan Lubreski (7-0) early in game two with four base runners in the first two innings. They finally broke through in the second when Musser scored on a double play. The Marauder lead stretched to 3-0 in the fourth on RBI singles from
Tyler McDonald and King.
Starter
Tad Barton (7-3) was in full control through four innings, but walked the first two batters of the fifth. That's when the trouble started. After getting two outs, Joe Bennie, Ernst and Eric Boyer recorded three consecutive singles to push four runs across the plate.
The Marauders put two runners on in the sixth but come up empty. Keenan Stare closed the door with a 1-2-3 seventh inning.
King, Stone and McDonald each had two hits.
Adam Zipko pitched 2.1 scoreless innings.
