Box Score Winston-Salem, N.C. - A four-run first inning set the stage for Millersville's 7-5 win over East Stroudsburg Saturday in the NCAA Atlantic Regional. The win advances the Marauders to a match-up with unbeaten Seton Hill Saturday night at 6 p.m. and eliminates ESU from the tournament.
Millersville (40-17) earned its 40th win for the second time in the last three seasons and for just the third time in school history. The victory also came against a Warrior club that had defeated Millersville three times in 2013.
ESU (34-18) out-hit Millersville by an 11-9 margin, and Millersville drew seven walks and had three batters hit. Still, the see-saw battle came down to the bullpen over the final three-plus innings. Millersville leaned heavily on freshman
Sean Stephenson and junior
Adam Zipko, who registered his PSAC-best ninth save of the season.
Zach Stone continued lights-out postseason performance by going 3-for-5 with two runs and two RBIs. The redshirt junior has now hit safely in all seven postseason games.
Tyler McDonald went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and picked a perfect time to slam his first home run of the season.
ESU, which won the PSAC Tournament, was sent reeling early when Millersville's first four batters all reached base and all scored.
Evan King led off the bottom of the first with a double.
Jeremy Musser singled, and Stone drove in both with a single of his own.
Dan Johnson, who reached base four times in the game and seven over the last two, was plunked, and after two sacrifice bunts, McDonald singled in Johnson for a 4-0 lead.
The Warriors evened the score with a four-run inning of their own. In the top of the fourth,
Tad Barton (8-4) hit two batters and surrendered three hits. A fielding error also allowed an additional run to score.
Johnson helped the Marauders retake the lead in the top of the next inning by drawing a walk and moving to third on a ground out and sacrifice bunt. He raced home on a wild pitch from Matt Smith (6-5). Just pitches later, McDonald drilled a Smith fastball over the left field wall to push Millersville's lead to 6-4.
ESU picked up run on a double from Jimmy Graziano in the sixth and was threatening with two runners on when Coach
Jon Shehan called Stephenson from the bullpen. Facing leadoff hitter Joe Bennie, Stephenson registered a strikeout to end the threat. The freshman right-hander gave up two singles to start the seventh but forced Mike Tenaglia into a 5-4-3 double play--one of three he ground into in the game--and struck out ESU's leading hitter Chris Knott to end the inning.
The Marauders turned to Zipko in the eighth, and after putting runners on the corners, Zipko forced Bennie to fly out for the third out.
Millersville stranded the bases loaded in the fifth and sixth innings but added a much-needed insurance run in the eighth. Stone led off with a double, and Johnson singled to left to boost the advantage to 7-5.
Zipko faced Tenaglia with a runner on first and a nifty double play turned by
Evan King ended the game.
Zipko and Stephenson combined for 3.1 scoreless innings. Barton scored his eighth win after last 5.2 innings and allowing three earned runs.
Millersville now faces Seton Hill with a berth to the regional championship game on the line. It is a win-or-go-home scenario for the Marauders, but Seton Hill, which beat Shippensburg and East Stroudsburg in its first two games, can move to Sunday unbeaten with a win over Millersville. Seton Hill is the No. 3 seed in the regional with a 41-15 record.
