TOURNAMENT OVERVIEW
• Millersville baseball is the No. 1 seed in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional for the second time in the last three seasons and is making its fourth NCAA Tournament appearance since 1998. The Marauders hosted and won the 2011 Atlantic Regional and has won two regional titles in its three previous appearances.
• The opening round game of Millersville vs. Concord is identical to the 2011 regional. The Marauders won that game by a 3-1 score behind 7.0 innings from
Brooks Rothschild and two hits from both
Zach Stone and
Jeff Heisey, who are current starters for the 2013 Marauders. Current Concord starters Bret Blevins and Josh Wenger also had hits in the game.
• The entire regional field has a familiar feel for the Marauders as five of the six teams also played in the 2011 regional, and Millersville has played four of the teams in the regular season over the last two seasons.
• In 17 career postseason games,
Zach Stone is hitting 23-for-62 (.371) with seven doubles and nine RBIs. He totaled five hits in last week's PSAC Tournament.
ABOUT CONCORD
• The Mountain Lions posted an outstanding 36-18 overall record and swept through the WVIAC Tournament with a 4-0 record and a 27-9 scoring margin to earn an automatic berth to the field. Concord coach Andrew Wright is in his fourth season and owns an 89-71 overall record with two WVIAC Championships. As a player and assistant coach, he helped Concord to four WVIAC title games and two championships.
• Concord went 7-9 this season against non-WVIAC schools and played seven games against PSAC schools, going 3-4. Shippensburg won three from Concord. Concord, however, defeated IUP in three of four and scored 47 runs in the series. Concord lost to Winston-Salem State 9-6 on the road and also lost two to Seton Hill, giving the team a 0-6 record against regional teams this season. Millersville, on the other hand, owns a 7-6 record against NCAA Tournament teams.
• Millersville is having a record-setting offensive season, but Concord's numbers dwarf Millersville's. The .360 team batting average is second-best in Division II, its 47 homers is tied for fifth and its 514 runs is the best in Division II. It scored 10 or more runs 26 times. Joey Miller ranks sixth nationally in home runs and second in RBIs. Ryan Johnston is fourth in RBIs. Eight players are hitting at least .358. Concord ranked fourth in the WVIAC in team ERA at 5.01. That same number would rank 12th in the PSAC.
SOUTHERN COMFORT
• Millersville is no stranger to playing baseball in the state of North Carolina. Over
Jon Shehan's six seasons, the Marauders are 26-21 in the state, including a 20-11 record since 2010. Millersville has played seven games in Winston-Salem over the last two seasons, going 3-1 in 2012 and 1-2 to start this season.
OFFENSIVE ERUPTION
• The Millersville lineup leads the PSAC in runs with 74 more than any other team. It also ranks first in hits, doubles, RBIs, walks and on base percentage. The 2000 club set the standard as the top offensive team in school history, but this year's team is averaging more runs per game (7.1), more RBIs per game (6.41) and just as many hits per game (9.9). Millersville's .323 team average is an incredible jump from last season's .286. Millersville set a PSAC record for runs in a game on April 3 with 40 against Lincoln. The team scored 63 runs in the doubleheader.
SLAMMIN' STONE
• At the forefront of Millersville's tremendous offensive season is redshirt junior
Zach Stone, who posted a .413 batting average in the regular season (currently .409) to be the first Marauder since Mike Wokulich in 2002 to bat over .400. Stone ranks first in the PSAC in on base percentage, third in hitting, eighth in slugging percentage, fifth in runs, second in hits, sixth in RBIs, sixth in doubles, 10th in homers and has struck out only 13 times. Stone recently passed Coach Shehan in career doubles with his 42nd and in just three years has 121 RBIs.
• Stone was at his best when it mattered, hitting .450 with eight doubles in league play. He is hitting .427 with runners on base, .348 with runners in scoring position and is almost automatic (17-for-23) with a runner on third and less than two outs. He also posted the second-longest hitting streak in school history with run of 17 during the season. He reached base in 18 consecutive games to start the season.
SPARK PLUG
•
Evan King may be the most important player to Millersville's success. He hit .397 with a .482 on base percentage, 28 RBIs and 42 runs scored in Millersville's 38 wins. In the team's losses, King hit .283 with a .338 on base percentage, scored eight runs and drove in one.
THE CAREER OF A KING
• King played two productive seasons before transferring to Millersville, where he has stolen 50 bases in two seasons. His first game of the Atlantic Regional will be his 200th game played and 198th career start, making him one of 14 players in PSAC history to play 200 games.
• He enters the regional ranked tied for 11th in PSAC history in career hits with 235. He also ranks 10th in walks (107), seventh in steals (88) and with 159 runs, he is two away from cracking the top 20. King is one of just two players in PSAC history to steal at least 20 bases in three seasons.
AMAZING MAYZA
•
Tim Mayza has dropped his ERA from 4.40 last season to a PSAC-best 1.28 this season. That incredible mark comes after a nine-inning shutout of Slippery Rock in the PSAC Tournament. He is 8.1 innings away from being one of just seven pitchers in PSAC history to throw 100 innings in a season. He has not allowed more than three runs in any start this season and allowed one or none in 12 of 14. His 1.04 WHIP is the best on the team.
• Left-handed hitters batted 9-for-57 (.158) against him. His 6.19 hits per game allowed is the best on the team.
WORKING TOWARD PERFECTION
• Two-time NCBWA Division II Pitcher of the Week
Chris Murphy made history in 2013 not only by throwing a no-hitter with 13 strikeouts against Glenville State on Feb. 24, but he also threw just the 18th perfect game in Division II history on March 15 against Philadelphia. He needed only 64 pitches (52 of which were strikes). It was the first perfect game by a PSAC pitcher since 1999.
• Murphy quickly acclimated to life in the PSAC, posting a scoreless innings streak of 25.1 innings at one point. He has set five single-season school records and is among the Division II leaders in victories with 12. He is tied for third in PSAC history in single-season victories and has the most since Kutztown's Glenn Woolard set the record at 14 in 2002. His 8.2 innings in the PSAC Tournament pushed him past
Brooks Rothschild for the most innings in school history. His 15th start will tie him for fourth-most in PSAC history. Murphy is 4.2 innings away from becoming the first PSAC pitcher to throw 100 innings in a season since 2006. Only six PSAC pitchers have ever thrown 100 innings in a season.
• Murphy is devastating against right-handed hitters, surrendering a .167 batting average against. He has also allowed only 22 two-out hits in 116 at bats. He went 6-0 with a 1.33 ERA against the PSAC East.
1-2-3 PUNCH
• Murphy, Mayza and
Tad Barton posted a 15-3 record with a 1.44 ERA and 10 complete games against the PSAC East. The Marauders posted a 30-7 record when either of the three started the game, but were just 8-8 when they weren't on the mound. If Mayza and Murphy both reach 100 innings pitched, they will become only the second pair of teammates in PSAC history to do so, joining 2001 Kutztown pitchers Tim Bausher and Glenn Woolard.
HANDLING THE HOT CORNER
• Third baseman
Tyler McDonald has bumped his average from .245 in 2012 to .352 in 2013. His 16 doubles is third-best in the PSAC. A true clutch hitter, he is hitting .417 with runners on base and .441 with runners in scoring position. With a runner on third base and less than two outs, he is 20-for-28.
BEEN THERE, DONE THAT
• 11 players on Millersville's 2013 roster were on the 2011 team that won the NCAA Atlantic Regional Championship.
Zach Stone and
Jeff Heisey were both starters, and
Tim Mayza,
Adam Zipko and
Tad Barton all played key roles on the pitching staff. In the seven NCAA Tournament games in 2011, Stone batted an incredible .414 (12-for-29) with four doubles, four runs and five RBIs. Heisey batted .250 with three doubles and four runs.
Tim Mayza started two games, going 1-1, winning his start against Mercyhurst in the Atlantic Regional.
Tad Barton threw four scoreless and hitless innings of relief, and Zipko allowed only one unearned run in 3.1 innings of action.
FRESHMEN ORIENTATION
•
Tyler Orris has the rare distinction of a true freshman starting all 54 games at shortstop. He has acclimated himself quickly at the position, producing two walk-off RBIs and serving as the game-winning run against Gannon in the PSAC Tournament. He was always able to handle himself at the plate, reaching base in the first 15 games of his career, but after committing seven errors in the first eight games, he has fielded .973 over the last 46. Orris has more starts at shortstop than any other true freshman in school history. He is also the first Millersville freshman shortstop to start for a regional qualifying team.
• Orris' classmate,
Jeremy Musser has had quite a year himself, ranking in seventh in the PSAC in batting average at .367. It he can maintain that average, it will top Derek Kline's 2008 freshman season average of .364. Kline, of course, went on to break the school record for career hits.
Musser ranks sixth in the PSAC in runs scored. No freshman in the regional has a batting average as high as Musser's.
• With a combined 98 starts, Musser and Orris have the most starts of any two freshmen in Millersville history. No other regional qualifying team at Millersville started two freshmen as regulars.
WHAT ROOKIE WALL?
• After 48 games and 44 starts,
Jeremy Musser is showing no signs of tiring. In fact, he is heating up. Over his last 15 games, Musser is batting .442 (23-for-52) with two doubles, two triples, 14 runs, 13 RBIs and five steals. He has six multi-hit games during that stretch and went 6-for-16 with six RBIs in four PSAC Tournament games. Musser had a 13-game and has reached base in 19 consecutive games, which is the team's longest of the season.
MAKING THE SAVE
• Millersville is becoming the program of the closer. Junior closer
Adam Zipko tied for the PSAC lead in saves with seven, making it four consecutive seasons that a Marauder has ranked in the top five in the PSAC in saves and has totaled at least six saves.
TAKE ONE FOR THE TEAM
• No player in the PSAC is better at getting on base that
Zach Stone. In fact, fewer players in Division II are better. Stone ranks 14th nationally in on base percentage, drawing a team-leading 25 walks and being hit by 18 pitches. Stone is ranked in the top 25 nationally in HBP. He has been plunked 43 times in his career. His 18 is tied for second-most in school history and tied for seventh-most in PSAC history. He is now one of only three players in PSAC history to have been hit by a pitch 15 or more times twice.
SETTING THEM DOWN
•
Chris Murphy has racked up 93 strikeouts in his 95.1 innings of work. That total ranks second in the PSAC and he has the opportunity to become just the 15th player in PSAC history to record 100 strikeouts in a season. He has already shattered the previous school record of 85, which was owned by Jay Dimler.
CLEANING UP THE AWARDS
• For the first 116 seasons of Millersville baseball, the program had no PSAC Pitcher of the Year of PSAC East Player of the Year award winners. Now it has both.
Chris Murphy won pitcher of the year and Stone won player of the year while Coach
Jon Shehan was named PSAC East Coach of the Year for the second time in his six seasons.
• Seven Millersville players were named All-PSAC East--the most for the program since 1982. With
Tim Mayza and
Tad Barton joining Murphy, Millersville had three starting pitchers named All-PSAC East for the first time ever.
Dan Johnson is Millersville's first back-to-back first team selection since Matt Knox in 2000 and 2001.
