
McNerney Receives CSCAA Jean Freeman Scholarship

Millersville, Pa. - Millersville assistant swimming coach Katie McNerney was awarded the 2013 Division II Jean Freeman Scholarship by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) for her contributions as an assistant coach for the Marauders.
McNerney has been an assistant coach under Kyle Almoney for two years. The Marauders have set 15 school records during that time. McNerney also helped direct the team to score the most points in program history at the 2013 PSAC Championships. The Marauders finished 10th with 148 points which was 27 more points than the previous record.
McNerney attended Clarion and was a two-time All-American for the Golden Eagles. Prior to her stint at Millersville, McNerney was a head coach at a YMCA and for the Villa Maria Academy. While coaching at the academy McNerney vaulted the team from a 10th place ranking in the district to the third best team.

The Jean Freeman Scholarship is given annually to a male and a female assistant coach in each NCAA division whose exceptional contributions have brought recognition to their college or university, and whose leadership, integrity, honesty, competitive attitude and personal graciousness epitomizes those characteristics reflected by Jean Freeman. The scholarship will provide each of the six selected assistant coaches with the convention fee, transportation and lodging to the annual CSCAA Convention and Clinic.
Jean Freeman was a pioneer in collegiate women's athletics who served as a mentor and leader to numerous women and men who have gone on to become head swimming coaches in the collegiate ranks. Jean Freeman swam for the Minnesota Gophers from 1968-72 and then went on to serve as an assistant coach with the team for one season before being named as the program's head coach in 1973.
Both Almoney and McNerney will be attending the annual CSCAA Convention and Clinic this week.
