Millersville, Pa. - Millersville head football coach Greg Breitbach touched down in Harrisburg airport at 11 p.m. Thursday evening. At 8 a.m., he met with new Millersville University president Dr. John Anderson. One hour later, he was introduced to the media and the community. It is safe to say that the last 36 hours have been a whirlwind for Breitbach. But he has hit the ground running and is already implementing a new attitude.
A sizeable audience greeted Breitbach in the Student Memorial Center (SMC) Atrium and he fielded questions from media, alumni, supporters of the program and even from Twitter (@CoachBreitbach). Breitbach delivered his plans for recruiting, engaging alumni and most importantly, putting his players in a position to excel on and off the field.
"There is tremendous room for growth," said Breitbach in the press conference. "It is clear to me that this community and this university want to be successful--not just in athletics but in academics and in all things associated with the university. I look forward to helping our players grow not just in football but all areas in life at Millersville."
Breitbach's wife and three children are currently in North Dakota but will be joining him soon. For the first time in his life, he bought a one-way plane ticket. There is a change in scenery, but he has been in similar situations before, coaching at four levels of collegiate football including pushing North Dakota from Division II to Division I FCS status.
As an assistant at North Dakota, Breitbach helped the program from two NCAA Division II playoff appearances to a Division I conference championship--the first in school history. In five years directing the offense, he has displayed balance, efficiency and adaptability. He, however, will be the first to tell you that it is more than just scheme and game plan.
"I am much better with a whistle around my neck than a tie but you notice I have not yet talked about the X's and O's," said Breitbach. "It is about motivating the young men to take advantage of the skills they have academically and athletically.
"We intend to do this thing right, we are going to put everything we have into it," said Breitbach. "You have to earn everything in life, you have to earn it. You have to get a little better everyday."
Breitbach also discussed the newness and development at Millersville. As the football coach, he states that it's his job to gather the resources and align the program for success.
"I like where we are at with the athletic department," said Breitbach. "There is a commitment here. It is my job to provide the alignment to have everyone pull the rope in the right direction. I can provide a lot of young men that are already here the chance for great college experience."
Breitbach is intent on making a culture change. It starts in two days at the first spring football practice.
