Box Score 2 West Chester, Pa. - For the third year in a row Millersville baseball went into West Chester's Serpico Stadium and swept a doubleheader. And for the third year in a row,, Millersville baseball will be playing in the PSAC Tournament. The Marauders won game one by a 9-0 score and completed the sweep with an 8-4 win in game two.
With the game one victory, Millersville (32-12, 14-4 PSAC East) clinched a spot in the postseason, and the game two victory, coupled with East Stroudsburg's sweep of Kutztown, put the Marauders two games up on the Golden Bears with six to play in the chase for the PSAC East crown. West Chester dropped under .500 at 18-20-1 and fell to 9-9 in league play. It is the first time in school history that Millersville has reached the PSAC Tournament in three consecutive seasons.
The Marauders broke down two barriers Friday. In addition to clinching a third-straight playoff berth, they also won six consecutive games at West Chester for the first time on record. Both of Friday's victories were emphatic.
Tim Mayza (9-2) hurled a complete-game two-hitter in the opener, beating 2012 NCAA Division II Championship MVP Joe Gunkel.
Tad Barton (7-2) improved to 5-0 against the PSAC East this season by blanking the Golden Rams over his first five innings of work.
Tyler Orris reached base seven times in the two games and scored three runs in the opener.
Evan King reached base five times and scored four runs in the doubleheader.
After suffering just his second defeat of the season last week against Mansfield, Mayza responded by striking out six, allowing only five Golden Rams to reach base and dropping his ERA to a PSAC-best 1.42 in the process.
Millersville took advantage of a West Chester miscue in the third to score its first run.
Zach Stone then put the Marauders up by two with a sacrifice fly. The lead expanded to 4-0 when
Jeremy Musser squeezed home
David Pine, and
Dan Johnson, who totaled three RBIs in the game, pushed home a run.
The game was blown wide open in the sixth when Pine doubled, Orris tripled and King doubled in three consecutive at bats. Johnson doubled in a pair as well to give the Marauders a 9-0 lead.
The offensive onslaught continued in game two as the Marauders produced at least one run in four consecutive innings starting in the second. The lineup gave Barton an 8-0 lead before West Chester produced a four-run sixth inning. Fred Breidenbach (3-3) was tagged for nine hits in five innings.
Mark Stuckey recorded two doubles, a steal and two RBIs. Orris went 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Stone plated two and reached base twice. King and
Tyler McDonald also scored two runs apiece.
Adam Zipko entered in the seventh and pitched a scoreless inning to close out the win.
