Marauder Attack Tamed by Mercyhurst in 11-7 Defeat

Erie, Pa. - The No. 15 Mercyhurst Lakers stymied the Millersville women's lacrosse offensive attack and defeated the Marauders 11-7 in a low-scoring affair Saturday afternoon.

Millersville (8-6, 3-6 PSAC) was led by junior Caitlin Shannon who tied a game-high with four scores and recorded her eighth game of the year with at least three goals. Brooke Fisher (2) and Becky Donkin (1) accounted for the other three goals for the Marauders. Lauren Mateja saved nine shots in the loss and has now totaled nine or more saves in 11 of the teams 14 contests.

Mercyhurst (12-3, 7-2 PSAC) saw six different players score in the win, and Kayla Minner led the Lakers with four scores. Rebecca Muscella notched six saves in the victory.

The 18 total goals was the second least the Marauders have seen in a game this season. The 11 goals allowed was also tied for the least Millersville has given up in a loss this year.

After neither team could score in the first half of the second period, Mercyhurst broke through with two goals to push its advantage to 9-4 with only eight minutes remaining in action.

The Marauders responded with unassisted goals by Fisher and Shannon (2) to narrow the score with just under two minutes remaining to 9-7.

Mercyhurst grabbed possession of the final three draw controls and finished the game on a 2-0 run to end with the 11-7 result.

The first 23 minutes of the game was a deciding factor in the Marauders fate as Mercyhurst jumped out to a 5-1 lead with seven minutes remaining in the first half. After that stretch of play, both teams scored six goals apiece in the final 37 minutes with the Marauders outscoring the Lakers 6-4 before the final minute of the game.

Despite the loss, the Marauders put together one of their best defensive performances of the season. The Black and Gold caused the second most caused turnovers in a game (14) and picked up the third most groundballs (29). Millersville also had four free position goals, the fourth most this year.

Millersville hosts its final home game of the year on Tuesday, April 23 against Shippensburg. The Marauders aim to snap their current four-game losing streak against the Raiders and pick up their first nine win season since 2001. Game time against the Raiders is set for 4 p.m.
