Baseball Takes Series from No. 12 Kutztown with Game One Win

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Millersville, Pa. - Millersville baseball captured the series from No. 12 Kutztown with a 5-1 win in game one of Sunday's doubleheader at Marauder Park. Kutztown used one big inning in game two to salvage its only win of the four-game series by a 6-3 score.

Millersville (27-10, 10-2 PSAC East) made a statement early in game one, blasting starter Jordan Gottshall (1-1) for five runs in the first frame. Evan King started the inning with a single to right center. Jeremy Musser ripped a double to the opposite field, and Zach Stone followed with a RBI double. Dan Johnson walked, and Jeff Heisey doubled in a pair. Tyler McDonald hit a sacrifice fly for the fifth run of the inning.

The 5-0 lead was plenty for Chris Murphy (9-1), who was not sharp but valiantly battled through some difficult situations. He worked 5.2 innings and allowed only one run. He has now surrendered just two runs in his last 33.2 innings.

Kutztown (23-8, 12-4 PSAC East) loaded the bases in each of the first two innings, but Murphy worked his way out of both jams, allowing only a bases loaded walk in the second. Kutztown loaded the bases again in the fourth but Murphy got a ground out to end the inning. Murphy walked four and hit three but overcame it all to score his team-best ninth winning of the season. Adam Zipko struck out two in seventh.

Four different Marauders had two hits. Stone went 2-for-4 and pushed an incredible stretch of hitting into the second game.

Kutztown scored first in game two, but Millersville answered in the third on a RBI double from Stone. Jim McDade (2-4) worked his way through four innings, but Kutztown's potent offense, that had been held to just six runs in the first three games of the series, finally got untracked. Four singles started the inning, and Joe Peters pinch hit and slammed a three-run bomb over the left field wall, giving his team a 6-1 lead.

The Marauders closed the gap with a sacrifice fly from Musser and a RBI ground out from Stone in the fifth. Mark Stuckey and Tyler McDonald led off the sixth with back-to-back singles, but the Kutztown bullpen entered and ending the Millersville threat.

Brandon Shimo (4-1) went five innings, allowing three runs--one earned--on nine hits. Jordan Garcia pitched 1.2 innings, and Billy Felo scored his third save of the season. Sean Stephenson pitched 2.2 scoreless innings for the Marauders.

Stone recorded two more hits in game two, giving him 10 hits in the series, five consecutive games with at least two hits and a seven-game stretch in which he went 17-for-27. He is hitting .512 (21-for-41) with 11 RBIs in 12 PSAC East games.

Millersville travels to Mansfield on Friday, April 19 for a pair of PSAC East games. The Marauders host the Mountaineers the following day. That day serves as ballpark dedication day and the first 200 fans to the park receive a free Turkey Hill drink.
