Box Score 2 Kutztown, Pa. - Millersville baseball scored two incredibly important PSAC Eastern Division road wins Saturday, beating No. 12-ranked Kutztown by scores of 3-1 and 5-4.
Millersville (26-9, 9-1 PSAC East) and Kutztown (22-7, 11-3 PSAC East) entered the four-game series with West Chester as the top three teams in the division, all having just one league loss. The Marauders took the upper-hand and improved to 9-1 in divisional play for the first time since 2000. Kutztown had won 16-of-17 prior to Saturday. Millersville has now swept a doubleheader at Kutztown in two of the last three seasons.
Zach Stone produced a brilliant day at the plate, going 6-for-6 in the doubleheader including a 4-for-4 effort in game two. It was his second four-hit game of the season. Stone is an incredible 13-for-19 over his last five games.
Dan Johnson provided the heavy lifting in game one with 3-for-3 effort and a two-run home run.
Evan King and
Kurt Seiders did the majority of the damage in game two with two RBIs apiece.
Tim Mayza (8-1) was his consistently dominant self in the opener, holding a Kutztown lineup with four of the PSAC's top 10 hitters to just one run on five hits while striking out six for his third complete game and eighth win in nine decisions.
Johnson broke a scoreless tie in the fourth with his second home run of the season. Millersville tacked on another in the sixth when Stone doubled, Johnson singled and
Jeff Heisey brought home Stone with a well-executed, one-out squeeze play.
Three runs was more than enough support for Mayza. He never allowed more than one base runner in an inning, and Kutztown's only run came on a Joe Peters home run in the bottom of the seventh. Mayza quickly recovered from the blast by retiring the next three batters.
The Marauders showed some resolve in game two after falling behind early. After Millersville scored on an error to start game one, Kutztown put three runs on the board with four hits off starter
Tad Barton in the bottom of the first.
Millersville rallied immediately. King drove in
David Pine with a single, and Seiders followed with a two-run double to put the Marauders back in front, 4-3.
Barton found his groove, allowing only one hit over the next four innings. His offense added some much-needed insurance in the fifth when King doubled home
Tyler McDonald.
Kutztown fought back in the sixth, starting the inning with two singles and a hit batsman. One run scored on a sacrifice fly, and with two runners still on base,
Adam Zipko entered and recorded the final out of the inning.
Zipko breezed through the heart of the Kutztown lineup in the seventh, freezing two Golden Bears for strike outs and getting a ground out to shortstop.
Along with Stone's four hits, McDonald tallied three. Millersville also swiped three bases in the game.
The Marauders and Golden Bears meet for another doubleheader on Sunday at Marauder Park. Game time is 1 p.m. and fans can watch live on
