Millersville, Pa. - As a sign of solidarity for children with cancer and to raise funds for the St. Baldrick's Foundation, Millersville University track and field coach Andy Young, baseball coach Jon Shehan and chief of police Pete Anders said goodbye to their locks during a head-shaving event Friday at Chryst Field at Biemesderfer Stadium.
The trio of Millersville University employees were shaved bald to support an organization that has raised more than $100 million in research grants to combat childhood cancers.
"St. Baldrick's is an outstanding organization that raises funds for pediatric cancer," said Shehan. "Pediactric cancer is a prevalent and devastating sickness that is too close to many of us. (My wife) Lindsay and I know a few families that deal with this frightening phenomenon. When Chief Anders approached me about shaving my head to raise funds, it was a no-brainer. I was happy to do it."
"I'm excited to help bring attention and donations to cancer research along with some other Millersville employees, but I'm terrified to see what I look like bald," said Young.
The Millersville team set a goal of raising $2,000 by shaving their heads and as of Friday, they had nearly reached that goal with just over $1,700 donated. To support the Millersville team and the St. Baldrick's Foundation, click here.
According to the St. Baldrick's Foundation, more children in the United States are lost to cancer than to all other diseases combined. The foundation exists to fill the gap in funding for childhood cancer as it receives on four percent of federal funding for cancer research.
The first head-shaving event was held in 2000 and has since grown to more than 1,200 events and over 50,000 shavees in 2013 alone. This year's efforts have raised more than $25 million.
