Box Score 2 Bloomsburg, Pa. - Millersville baseball couldn't have asked for a better start to PSAC Eastern Division play.
Tim Mayza and
Tad Barton shut down Bloomsburg's lineup as the Marauders took both games of Friday's doubleheader by scores of 4-1 and 7-0.
Millersville (16-8, 2-0 PSAC East) banged out 21 hits in the twinbill.
Dan Johnson accounted for four including three in the opener, and
Jeff Heisey recorded two hits in both games. The charged up offense was a welcomed changed for the Marauders. After tallying at least 10 hits in 11 of the first 15 games, Millersville had hit the mark only once in the last seven prior to Friday. The Marauders displayed aggressiveness at the plate and did not draw a single walk in the two games.
Mayza (6-1) continued his steady brilliance in game one, giving up only run on three hits and four walks while fanning seven. He has yet to allow more than one run in any of his eight starts this season.
Barton (3-2) won for the third time in his last four starts by holding the Huskies to three hits and one walk in a complete game, shut out effort. It was his second shut out in his last three starts and has surrendered just six earned runs over his last 25 innings after two rocky appearances to start this season.
Millersville provided Mayza with some early support in the opener, scoring one run in each of the first three frames. Johnson doubled home
Jeremy Musser in the first,
David Pine plated
Mark Stuckey with a RBI ground out in the second, and Stuckey bunted home Johnson in the third.
After allowing a run in the first, Mayza locked down the Huskies' lineup. They threatened in the fifth by loading the bases on a single and two walks, but Mayza left the bases loaded.
Musser padded the Marauders' lead in the sixth with a RBI single. Mayza struck out the first batter of the seventh and then handed the ball to
Adam Zipko, who closed the door with a pair of ground outs.
Musser and Heisey both had two hits for the Marauders.
The Millersville offense took full advantage of Bloomsburg miscues in game two as six of seven runs being unearned.
Once again Millersville struck in the first when
Zach Stone doubled in
Evan King. A fielding error in the third inning opened the door for RBI singles from Heisey and
Tyler McDonald. Millersville added three more in the fifth. Johnson and Heisey both scored with the help of errors and
David Pine drove in Stuckey with sacrifice fly.
Barton controlled the game from start to finish, facing more than four batters in an inning only once.
