Second Half Marauder Rally Stuns Huskies, Creates Three-Way Tie for First

Box Score Bloomsburg, Pa. – Down 37-20 at the half, the Marauders were in danger of falling two games behind Bloomsburg in the PSAC East standings with six to play. Millersville came from behind like it did in the first meeting and got the better of the Huskies for the second time this season, rallying from a 19-point second half deficit to stun Bloomsburg on its home floor 64-62 and forge a logjam at the top of the division ladder.

Redshirt senior point guard Mashira Newman registered her second straight double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds and redshirt senior forward Aurielle Mosley notched her seventh double-double of the year on 10 points and 11 rebounds. Millersville's win pushes the Marauders to 14-6 (11-5 PSAC) and drops the Huskies to 15-5 and 11-5 in PSAC play. The Marauders are in first place due to a 2-0 head-to-head record with Bloom.

Even with the strong performances of Newman and Mosley and the absence of third-leading scorer Carly Gallagher, the biggest player in this game for Millersville was Senada Mehmedovic. The junior guard gave the Marauders the lead in the final minute on two free throws after picking the pocket of reigning PSAC East Player of the Year Dana Wieller. Mehmedovic finished with 12 points, a career-high eight rebounds and three assists.

After a first half in which Millersville shot just 33.3 percent from the field and 2-of-8 from the line, the Marauders saw the Huskies take a 17-point lead into the break. Bloom shot 50 percent in the first half and Danielle Derr and Lauren Ellis were tied for a game-high eight points. No Marauder had more than five points.

The second half didn't start any better, and the Bloomsburg lead swelled to as much as 19 with 18:05 to play. At that point, the Marauders woke up and delivered a 20-0 run to claim a 43-42 lead courtesy of six points from Newman and five from Mehmedovic.

After briefly taking a lead on Newman's layup with 12 minutes to play, the game saw four ties, but Bloom would not relinquish the lead until the final minute on Mehmedovic's steal of Wieller and two free throws with 36 seconds to play. After Mehmedovic again pestered Wieller into a second turnover in a 25-second span, Newman cashed in on two more free throws to seal the win.

Millersville flipped the script in the second half, turning in a 50 percent shooting performance as a team. The Marauders held the Huskies to just 33.3 percent shooting in the second half, and Bloom made just 3-of-6 free throws after shooting 91.7 percent from the stripe in the opening half.

The Marauders had one other player in double figures, Celeste Robinson. The freshman guard finished with 12 points, five assists and three rebounds. Without Gallagher, all four Marauder starters who scored in double figures (Newman, Mosley, Mehmedovic and Robinson) played at least 36 minutes apiece, and Newman and Robinson played all 40 minutes.

Wieller entered the game at second in the conference in scoring with 15.4 points per game. Millersville made the senior guard work for the 10 points she could manage, as she hoisted 14 attempts and made just five in addition to turning the ball over 10 times. The Marauder defense allowed only one player to score more than 10 points, as Kayla Oxenrider finished with 13 to lead the Huskies.

Millersville won the battle on the boards, outrebounding Bloomsburg by a 43-28 margin. The Marauders had three players with more rebounds than the Huskies' leading rebounder in Ellis, who finished with seven. The offensive boards were especially important, as Millersville was able to manage 14 second chance points on 15 offensive rebounds and Bloom only had six points on seven offensive pulls.

The Marauders now turn their attention to another big PSAC East battle Saturday at home against West Chester. The Golden Rams are just one game behind the three-team pileup at the top of the division, posting a 10-6 division mark to date. Millersville lost the first meeting between these teams back on Jan. 19 at Hollinger Fieldhouse, but the Marauders are glad to be playing the Golden Rams at home, carrying a 22-11 all-time record at Pucillo into Saturday's 1 p.m. tip time.
