GAME NOTES
· Against Mansfield Saturday, the Marauders bounced back from a Wednesday loss at Shippensburg to rout the Mounties, 75-49. Millersville's win came on the strength of
Mashira Newman's monster game. The redshirt senior point guard just narrowly missed a triple-double, notching 14 points, 10 assists and eight rebounds to go along with four steals. It would have been the first career triple-double for the Marauder captain and was the first game of her career in which she had double digit points and assists in the same game.
Aurielle Mosley provided the frontcourt punch, hitting for 14 points (on 5-of-7 shooting and 4-of-4 from the line), seven rebounds and two blocks in just 17 minutes. The reigning PSAC East Player of the Week for fourth time, Mosley has scored in double figures in her past four outings and missed her third consecutive double-double by three rebounds.
· Millersville's biggest key to victory is a strong start. It has been well documented throughout the season that the Marauders are undefeated when leading or being tied at the half, with a combined 11-0 (8-0 PSAC), but even more crucial is how Millersville starts the game rather than where the team is at the half. If the Marauders can take the first lead of the half and never look back, it is all but a certainty to be a blowout game. Mansfield was the sixth game this season where the team led its opponent wire-to-wire. In those six games, the Marauders are winning by an average of 22.6 points per game.
· Saturday's game was significant for the Marauders because of the fact that it clinched a PSAC Tournament berth for Millersville for the 17th-straight season. In the new expanded playoff format, all but two of the teams from each division qualify for the PSAC Tournament. The win bumped Millersville's 2012-13 record to 13-6 and 10-5 in PSAC play. It is the sixth-straight year under head coach
Mary Fleig that her teams have won at least 10 or more PSAC games. The Marauders now turn their attention to seeding with the back leg of PSAC East games left to play. The team currently sits in third place due to tiebreakers, but will face first-place Bloomsburg Wednesday evening for a chance to steal the division lead away from the Huskies.
· The Marauders are set up in a favorable position in the standings due to a 62-55 win over Bloom earlier this season back on Dec. 8, 2012. Because of that game, Millersville can clinch a season sweep of the Huskies with a win Wednesday night at Bloomsburg. It would be the first time the Marauders have swept Bloom since the 2009-10 season. In the earlier meeting this season, the Huskies were ranked 16th nationally entering the game, but Millersville held hot-shooting Bloomsburg to just 31.7 percent on its home floor to come away with a win. Mosley and fellow senior frontcourt mate
Miesha Cousins both had double-doubles in the contest, pulling down 13 rebounds apiece as the Marauders rallied from a six point second half deficit.
· Wednesday night's matchup will feature the top two offensive and defensive units in the PSAC East. Both the Marauders and Huskies are the only teams that rank in the conference's top five of both scoring offense and scoring defense. Millersville is ranked fourth in scoring offense at a 70.8 point per game pace and fifth in defense at 59.8 points per game allowed; Bloomsburg has the top scoring offense in the entire conference, boasting an average of 76.4 points per game while allowing 58.3 points per game on the defensive end, which ranks fourth overall.
ABOUT BLOOMSBURG
· The Huskies play host to the Marauders Wednesday night at Nelson Fieldhouse for a 6 p.m. tip time hoping to exact revenge on Millersville for the Marauders' 62-55 come-from-behind win back on Dec. 8, 2012 at Pucillo Gymnasium. Bloomsburg is the top-ranked team in the PSAC East with a record of 15-4 and an 11-4 league record to its credit. Wednesday night's road team has seen all four of its losses so far this season come in conference play, but the Huskies have dropped just one of their past nine games, with five of those eight wins coming on Bloomsburg's home floor. The average margin of victory over the Huskies' last eight wins is an astounding 26.9 points per game, and they are likely glad to get Millersville at home, posting an 8-1 home record to date.
· Bloomsburg also brings the top offense in the PSAC to the table Wednesday evening. The Huskies average 76.4 points per game and their league-best point differential average of 18.1 points per game is due in large part to that. That is no shot at the team's defense, which also comes to play every game, allowing just 58.3 points per game to rank fourth in the league in that category. Offensive and defensive efficiency are big reasons why Wednesday's home team ranks near the top of the PSAC in both scoring offense and scoring defense. The Huskies shoot the ball at 42.9 percent as a team, second in the PSAC behind only Gannon. Defensively, Bloom holds its opponents to just 34.5 percent from the field and good for a conference-best rate. The team that trails Bloom for second in that category is Wednesday's visitors, the Marauders.
· Bloom's offense is allowed to hum along because of the play of guard Dana Wieller, who scores at 15.4 point per game clip to rank second in the PSAC. Wieller scored a game-high 19 points last time these teams met, but Millersville made her work for every point, as Wieller hoisted 13 shots and made just five while turning the ball over six times. Most of Wieller's scoring came from the line, where shot a perfect 8-for-8; her struggles came from deep, as she shot just 1-of-6 from 3-point range. She is one of four Bloomsburg players to average double-figure scoring for the year, but none of the other three players average more than 11.1 points per game.
· Lauren Ellis is another player that makes a big impact for the Huskies and one who the Marauders truly shut down in the first head-to-head matchup. Ellis, who averages 11.1 points per game and 7.2 rebounds per game on the season, managed just one point and three rebounds in 22 minutes at Pucillo Gymnasium. She was shut out shooting from the field, missing all six of her field goal attempts. The other two players who average in double digits for the Huskies are Kayla Oxenrider (10.5 points per game) and Catherine Noack (10.0). Alyssa Flanagan is the facilitator of the offense, posting a team-best 3.3 assists per game. The team shares the ball well, with four players who average at least 2.1 assists per game.
· Where the Huskies are vulnerable is the boards, as Ellis is the only player that averages more than 3.5 rebounds per game. That was the big difference the last time these teams met, as the Marauders ripped down 51 rebounds to just 28 for the Huskies. The rebounding edge was especially key in the second half, as Millersville had 11 second chance points on 11 attempts in the second stanza while holding the Huskies scoreless with just two offensive rebounds in the guts of the game.
