Box Score Winston-Salem, N.C. - Millersville erupted for 13 runs on 15 hits and withstood a late Winston-Salem State rally to earn its first win of 2013 by a 13-11 score.
Eight different Marauders recorded a hit. Leading the way was
Evan King's 4-for-4 day that included three stolen bases. The four hits matched a career high for King.
Zach Stone went 3-for-4 with a double, homer, walk and two RBIs.
Winston-Salem State (2-4) scored two runs off of Millersville (1-2) starter
Chris Murphy in the first, but the redshirt freshman settled in and cruised through six innings, fanning six and walking one over six innings.
With Murphy in control, the Marauders erupted for 13 runs between the fourth and seventh innings to take a sizable 13-2 lead. Winston-Salem State made the game interesting with an eight-run eighth inning and pulled within two runs before
Adam Zipko, who recorded the final six outs, was able to register his first save of the season.
Millersville scored its first two runs on passed balls, and it wasn't until the score was 2-2 and there were two outs in the fifth when the Marauders started to hit Tyler Hickernell (0-1). King started the two-out lightning with a single and steal.
Mark Stuckey drove him home with a single, and Stone blasted a two-run homer to put the Marauders in front 5-2. The floodgates completely opened in the sixth when the first nine batters reached. Millersville eventually put seven runs up on five hits and a couple of walks.
Tyler McDonald drove in
Jeff Heisey for another run in the seventh, and the 11 run lead was safe despite the Rams' comeback efforts.
McDonald and freshman
Tyler Orris both drove in two runs.
Jeremy Musser, in his first collegiate start, went 2-for-4 with two runs. Fellow freshman
Dan Stoltzfus also made his first collegiate start and went 2-for-5 with a RBI. Heisey finished his three-game series 6-for-13 with three doubles.
Millersville travels to Dahlonega, Ga., on Feb. 15 for games against North Georgia, Shorter and nationally-ranked West Florida over the weekend.
