Box Score Millersville, Pa. - East Stroudsburg gave the Millersville women's volleyball team all it could handle Friday night, but the Marauders came out on top in four sets.
Millersville (15-13, 10-9 PSAC) defeated the Warriors (6-25, 2-18 PSAC) in a tight match with set scores of 25-23, 25-22, 22-25, and 25-22. The Marauders now lead the all-time series 37-18 and have won the last 11 meetings between the two teams dating back to 2008.
The opening set was a sign of things to come with nine ties and four lead changes. Millersville's biggest lead of the set came at 10-6 before East Stroudsburg went on an 8-2 run to take a 14-12 advantage. The hosts answered right back scoring seven of the next nine points to go up on their guests, 19-16. Four different Marauders sent home a kill and the Warriors committed three errors over that stretch. After the visitors scored five straight points, they were out in front 21-19. The home team closed the set with a 6-2 run to take the set 25-23. The run was fueled by four errors from East Stroudsburg.
The second set opened with four ties in the first 10 points. Millersville used an 11-4 run to take an 16-9 lead and forced a timeout by the Warriors. Five of those 11 points came by way of errors by East Stroudsburg. The two teams went back and forth and the score was 20-13 in favor of the Marauders before the away team used another timeout. The closest the Warriors could get was two points at 24-22 but Millersville took the next point and won 25-22.
There were seven ties in the first 16 points scored of the third set. East Stroudsburg took the lead 9-8 and didn't give it up until the Marauders regained the advantage 18-17. The Warriors scored five of the next six points to take a 22-19 lead and forced a timeout by Millersville. The closest the hosts could get was one point at 22-21 but East Stroudsburg took the set 25-22.
The Warriors scored the first two points of the fourth set but a 9-2 run by the Marauders gave them a 9-4 lead. East Stroudsburg helped Millersville and committed seven errors in that stretch. The Marauders were up 13-9 before the Warriors scored six of the next seven points and led the set 15-14. Millersville delivered the knockout blow with six straight points and went on to win the set 25-22.
Mary Paul led the offense with 10 kills and only two errors on 22 total attacks to post a red-hot hitting percentage of .364. She also registered four block assists to tie the program record for block assists in a career with 241. Jessica Franz aided the attack with 18 assists and Erika Smith turned in 16 helpers. On defense, Brooklyn Smith led the way with 14 digs while Franz tallied 11.
The Marauders will honor their seniors Saturday afternoon before they take on the Kutztown Golden Bears. The match is set to begin at 1 p.m.
