Volleyball drops two more in Colorado

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO. – The Millersville University women's volleyball team finished the Mountain Lion Classic Tournament with two loses against Jamestown University and Western New Mexico University. Set scores in match one against Jamestown was 25-23, 25-20, 25-16, and 25-17. Set scores in match two against Western New Mexico was 25-18, 25-19, and 25-14.
 
Match One vs. Jamestown

Millersville (3-5) racked up 52 points on 39 kills, nine aces, four blocks, and 69 digs. Alex Nava and Taylor Welter led the Marauders' offense in kills, while Trinity Baldwin served up four aces and teamed up with Kat Dalessio dishing out 31 assists. On defense, Becca Hartranft recorded 21 digs with Welter holding two of the team's blocks. Despite the Marauders' all-around effort, Jamestown (5-1) held the edge at the net, out-blocking Millersville nine to four.
 
The Marauders came out strong in the opening set, jumping to a 6-2 lead over the Jimmies. With the score at 7-4, they extended their advantage behind key kills by Sam White, three straight aces by Baldwin, and several Jamestown errors fueling a 7-1 run. However, Jamestown responded with a surge of their own, rattling off ten points to even the score at 17. Riding that momentum, the Jimmies closed out the set and took a 1-0 lead.
 
Set two opened with tightly contested play, as neither team managed to pull ahead by more than two points. Trailing by one, Amanda Protzman tied it up for the Marauders, who then took the lead thanks to a series of Jamestown errors. With a slim 16-15 edge, Millersville's offense came alive igniting a dominant 7-0 run that pushed the score to 23-15. The Marauders maintained control to close out the set, evening the match at one set apiece.
 
The Jimmies surged ahead early in set three, rattling off four straight points to seize the momentum. The Marauders quickly responded, trimming the deficit to just one. However, Jamestown answered with a dominant 5-0 run to regain control. Caroline Halsey sparked a brief rally for Millersville, narrowing the gap to three, but the Jimmies pulled away once again with six unanswered points, building a 22-14 lead. The Marauders couldn't recover, ultimately dropping the third set.
 
Millersville started set four with back-to-back kills from Welter, setting an early tone. The two teams traded points in a tight stretch, but the Jimmies pulled ahead at 15-12 after a four-point run. From there, Jamestown took control with a decisive 10-4 surge, closing out the set and securing the match.
 
MatchTwo vs. Western New Mexico

The Marauders (3-6) hit .165 on the attack, finishing with 31 kills, four aces, and 27 digs. The Mustangs (4-4) held the edge at the net, out-blocking Millersville 7-2. Taylor Welter led the offense in kills, while Trinity Baldwin paced the team with 25 assists.
 
Western New Mexico and Millersville traded points early in set one before the Mustangs broke away with five straight, jumping out to an 8-2 lead. Welter reignited the Marauders' offense with three consecutive kills, helping to close the gap. Millersville stayed within reach, capitalizing on Mustang errors to pull within two, but Western New Mexico maintained its momentum and closed out the set.
 
The Mustangs opened set two in a chase, as Baldwin, Sam White, and Alex Nava combined for three early points to give Millersville a slight edge. The Marauders maintained their lead until a series of errors allowed the Mustangs to take control. The Mustangs extended their advantage with a 6-1 scoring run. Millersville responded with four straight points to cut the deficit to three, but key kills and additional Marauder errors helped the Mustangs close out set two.
 
After a brief exchange of points to start set three, Western New Mexico pulled ahead with a 9-5 lead. Welter and Nava attempted to spark a comeback for the Marauders, but the Mustangs held firm, riding an 11-2 scoring run to close out the set and secure the match victory.
 
The Marauders' next match is Wednesday, Sept. 17 when they host the Lions from Lincoln University at 7 p.m.
