Millersville, Pa. - The Millersville women's soccer team played toe-to-toe with the top team in the PSAC in Saturday's season finale, but a comeback attempt came up just short as the Marauders fell 2-1 to the California (Pa.) Vulcans.
Millersville (8-9-1, 7-8-1 PSAC) trailed to the Vulcans (15-3-1, 15-1 PSAC) for most of the game until sophomore Megan Kelley scored in the 77th minute. Freshman Savannah Hall played a pass to Kelley who ran on to the ball and fired a shot past Vulcan's keeper Meghan Jayes to tie the game at one goal apiece.
With the momentum in Millersville's favor the Vulcans answered quickly to halt the comeback attempt. California scored its second goal in identical fashion to its first. On a free kick, the Vulcans lofted a cross into the box and forward Stephanie Thompson headed the cross into the back of the net in the 80th minute, putting the visitors back on top, 2-1.
The Marauders were unable to connect on another score before time expired and saw their attempts at defeating the conference's top team fade away.
Millersville was able to keep up with the Vulcans, taking just as many shots and putting two more shots on the goal frame.
Kelley's score tied her for the team lead in goals with Megan Wilson at four. In both of her first two years as a Marauder Kelley has led the team in scoring.
Millersville finishes the year with its best record since 2004.
