Volleyball Defeats West Chester for the First Time Since 2005

Box Score West Chester, Pa. - The Millersville women's volleyball team ended a 15-match losing streak against West Chester, won its fourth consecutive match and moved its record above .500 with a 3-1 win over the Golden Rams Friday evening. 

The Marauders (13-12, 8-8 PSAC) defeated the Golden Rams (13-14, 5-11 PSAC) for the first time since 2005, and it helped solidify the Marauders' standing for the PSAC Tournament. They took the match by scores of 25-23, 20-25, 25-21, 25-19.

Millersville took command of the match early. The Marauders opened the first set on a 10-2 run that was fueled by three kills from Mary Paul and a pair from Katie Lesinski. Millersville's lead wasn't fewer than six until West Chester cut the deficit to three, 16-13. The Golden Rams finally pulled within one at 23-22 but never took the lead as the Marauders won the set 25-23.

The away team was out in front 2-0 to begin the second set before West Chester took the lead back. The Golden Rams led until Millersville battled back to tie the score up at 10-10. Three ties later, West Chester regained the advantage for good and won the set 25-20.

The third set had seven ties and three lead changes. Five of those ties came in the first 14 points scored. The Marauders then used a 6-2 run to go up 13-9 on their hosts. Lesinski and Emily Kaledas each sent home two kills during that stretch. The set saw two more ties before Millersville went up 18-17 and went on to win the set 25-21.

The score was tied 4-4 in the fourth set before the Marauders scored seven of the next eight points to go up 11-5. Lesinski registered two kills in that time span and the Golden Rams spotted Millersville with two errors as well. West Chester cut the deficit to one at 19-18 but never tied the set as the Marauders won 25-19 and the match three sets to one.

Lesinski led the attack with 13 kills, and Paul--fresh off a PSAC Athlete of the Week award--tallied 10 kills and only one error on 19 swings to post a hitting percentage of .474. Jessica Franz aided the attack with 20 assists and Erika Smith added 17. On defense, three Marauders dug out double-digit attacks including Brooklyn Smith (20), Lesinski (12) and Erika Smith (10). Emily Kaledas blocked six attacks above the net, one short of her career high.

Millersville travels to Cheyney on Saturday to battle the Wolves in a 1 p.m. start.
