Marauders Heat Up in Second Half, Tame Mountain Cats, 5-0

Box Score Millersville, Pa. - On a bitterly cold Homecoming night it took the Millersville men's soccer team a little longer than usual to heat up. The Marauders scored four goals in the span of 12 minutes in the second half to defeat Pitt-Johnstown 5-0 on Saturday night.

Millersville's (10-4-1, 7-2 PSAC) five goals were the most scored this season. Eight different players recorded a point with senior Andrew Dukes and junior Anthony Fratini leading the team with a goal and assist each. The Black and Gold took 30 shots in the game, the most that Millersville has taken since firing 31 in 2003 against Bloomfield. Brad Benzing recorded his sixth shutout of the year in the cage.

Pitt-Johnstown (2-14, 0-10 PSAC) did its best to keep the Marauders from scoring and the Mountain Cats defense did a good job until midway through the second period. The Marauders held the visitors to just four shots and one shot on goal. UPJ keeper Nolan Levine made 10 saves in the loss.

The only goal of the first half came off of a corner by Millersville. Sophomore Ben Johnston sent the corner into the box and 6-1 defender Fratini out-jumped the rest of the pack and headed the ball into the net for his first goal of the season.

The Millersville offense stalled for the next 50 minutes of play before getting hot.

Dukes began the scoring spree in the 59th minute on another Marauder goal off of a corner. Johnston sent the ball in again and this time Fratini's header went right to Dukes who punched in the ball for his team leading eighth score of 2013.

Seconds later Jeramey Robbins hauled in quick passes from Dukes and defender Colby Zeger and rifled a 20-yard target into the nylon, putting Millersville up, 3-0.

Just two minutes later Jaime Vazquez had a free kick attempt from 25-yards out. The midfielder sent his laser shot into the upper right 90 and put the home team up comfortably 4-0 with 30 minutes remaining.

The final goal of the game came in the 72nd minute off of the foot of senior Zack Caracciolo. Freshman Alex LaFaver sent a forward pass through the Mountain Cat defense that hit Caracciolo in stride. The forward knocked in his target and scored his second goal in as many days.

Millersville is now 4-0 in the all-time series with Pitt-Johnstown and has scored 20 goals in those four meetings.

The Marauders next game is on the road against nationally-ranked Slippery Rock on Oct. 30 in the NSCAA TV Game of the Week. Millersville and The Rock are both in the top-five in the NCAA Regional rankings and Wednesday's showdown could have important implications on both the PSAC Tournament as well as each teams hopes for the NCAA Tournament. Game time is 1 p.m. More information on the NSCAA TV Game of the Week can be found here.
