GAME OVERVIEW
• Millersville scored its first victory of the 2013 season last week at Cheyney and is searching for back-to-back wins for the first time since 2010. The Marauders are 22-19-1 in Homecoming games since Biemesderfer Stadium opened in 1968.
•
Ian Sadon recorded his third 100-yard game of the season last week against Cheyney with 134 yards on 20 carries. With two 100-yard performances in the last three games, Sadon and a physical running attack is becoming the Marauders' offensive identity. In his career, Sadon has received at least 20 carries four times, and he has rushed for 100 yards each time. He averaged 106.0 yards per game and 5.5 yards per carry in his last three games. Millersville rushed for a season-high 181 yards at Cheyney, and the running game is clicking at the perfect time as Lock Haven allows 240.1 rushing per game. Five of Lock Haven's seven opponents have rushed for at least 200 yards. No opponent has rushed for fewer than 160 yards.
• Millersville scored touchdowns on each of its first three possessions last week and those three drives consumed more than 16 minutes of clock. The Marauders have held a 67:23-53:37 edge in time of possession in each of the last two weeks, and not surprisingly, the defense has held both opponents to fewer than 300 yards of offense and was on the field for an average of 45 plays per game. The defense played an average of 64 plays in the first five weeks and allowed an average of 510.6 yards per game. Millersville is aiming to hold three consecutive teams to fewer than 300 yards of offense for the first time since weeks two through four of the 2006 season.
• Lock Haven opened the season 2-1 but has since lost four straight games. The Bald Eagles, however, have played teams tough in that stretch. They scored 21 fourth quarter points to come within six of Shippensburg and limited a high-powered West Chester offense to 34 points. After Lock Haven suffered through four-plus seasons without a win, John Allen, now in his third season, led the program to three wins since the 2012 season finale.
• Both of Lock Haven's wins this season came at home and against teams that are a combined 0-14. Now 0-3 on the road this season, Lock Haven has lost 30 consecutive road games with its last win coming in the final game of the 2007 season.
ABOUT THE SERIES
• Millersville and Lock Haven are both longtime members of the PSAC but have played only 26 times since the first meeting in 1928. Lock Haven went 16-3-1 from 1928-1959. The two teams did not play against until 1996, and Millersville has won six in a row since.
• The two teams played a down-to-the-wire game in 2011 at Lock Haven. Millersville led 21-10 thanks to three TD passes from
Dan Miller and two TD catches from
Dominic Sanders before Lock Haven scored 10 unanswered points. Lock Haven had four more possessions to win the game but the Marauder defense forced two punts, an interception and a batted down pass on the final play. Brandon Bader rushed for 105 yards for Lock Haven and Jesse Hoover had 139 yards on seven catches, including a 68-yard TD grab.
SCOUTING THE BALD EAGLES
• Lock Haven's offense is led by running back Brandon Bader, who is a third-year starter. Bader cracked the 2,000 career yards mark last week and now sits at 2,029, ranking sixth in school history. Bader is the team's workhorse, ranking sixth in the PSAC in carries and 11th in yards.
• The keys to the offense will be turned over to redshirt freshman Caleb Walton this week. The Manheim Central graduate will make his first career start after appearing in all six games this season. He has appeared in all six games this season but has yet to throw a touchdown pass. He has been sharp in his last three appearances, though, completing 5-of-7 for 50 yards against Bloomsburg, 2-of-2 for 21 yards against Edinboro before completing 14-of-23 passes for 186 yards against West Chester.
• The team's top target is Jesse Hoover, who owns 30 catches. Hoover is an underneath target, averaging just 9.6 yards catch. James Wilbern is a dangerous deep threat. He has 420 yards on just 22 catches and has two TD catches.
• George Christas is among the most productive defensive players in the PSAC, ranking eight in tackles and tying for the league lead in interceptions with four. The
Connor Casey will have to keep tabs on him.
• The Millersville offensive line will have its hands full with Tyrek Morgan. He ranks sixth in the PSAC in sacks with 5.0. The Marauders have already faced six of the top 10 sack artists in the PSAC this season and allowed at least a half-sack to each of them.
THE LAST TIME OUT
•Â
Ian Sadon and the Millersville ground game dictated play from start to finish and scores on their first three drives led the Marauders to a 30-12 road win over Cheyney. Sadon rushed for a career-high 134 yards and two touchdowns on 20 carries, and
David Coates added a 42-yard touchdown run as Millersville piled up a season-high 181 yards rushing and three rushing touchdowns.
• The defense did its part as well, setting season highs in tackles for loss (8.0), sacks (3.0) and interceptions (2.0). The Marauders led 28-0 in the fourth quarter before Cheyney got on the board.
MILLERSVILLE PICKERS
• The Millersville defense has generated four interceptions in the last three games including two against Cheyney.
Rasheed Johnson owns two of those interceptions and has 57 return yards. His 40-yard return against Cheyney was the sixth longest in the PSAC. It was the first career interception for all three players.
TAKE IT TO THE HOUSE
•
Dean May picked up a blocked PAT at Cheyney on Oct. 19 and returned it 98 yards for two points. It was Millersville's first defensive extra point return since Gordon Cain's against West Chester in 1999.
THE NEW BOOT
• Freshman
Evan Stahl made his collegiate debut at punter in week two and has quickly made a difference in the Marauders' kicking game. He currently ranks seventh in the PSAC with an average of 39.0 per punt.
• Against West Chester, he had a long of 69 yards, three punts inside the 20 and three longer than 50 yards. His 69-yarder is the third-best mark in the PSAC this season. Stahl has placed 10 of his 38 kicks inside the 20 and seven have been fair caught. Only one has been a touchdback. He has a punt of at least 42 yards in each of his last five games.
• He added placekicking to his duties in week four and hit his first career field goal (24 yards). He made it 2-for-2 against IUP with a 36-yard field goal in the first quarter.Â
MAKING A MARK
•
David Coates has already set Millersville career records for return yards and return attempts in a season and a career. Now he is trying to zero in on NCAA records. The junior is Division II's active career leader in kickoff returns (101) and return yards (2,288). St. Anselm's Keith Charles is a distant second with 86 career returns and Catawba's L.J. McCray trails Coates in return yards by 263.
• Coates leads all Divisions in kickoff return yards per game with an average of 78.9, ranks fifth in total kick returns and fifth in kickoff return yards.
• Teams have started limiting Coates' returns by kicking away from him. After 13 returns and averaging 21.0 yards per return in the first two weeks, Coates has had just 12 chances over the last five games. Still, he has three returns of over 30 yards this season.
• Last season, Coates was the lone Marauder to earn All-PSAC East honors, being named to the second team. He was Millersville's first return specialist to be named all-conference since Bakari Brown in 2004. He led all of Division II in return yards and his 1,156 kickoff returns set a new school record and was the second-most in PSAC history. His 25.7 yards per return ranked 33rd nationally and was the highest by a Marauder since Dondre Gilliam in 1999. He had at least one 25-yard return in nine of 11 games.
EMERGING THREAT
•
Greg Breitbach predicted that junior tight end
Trenton Petrovich would become a significant part of the offense, and he is making strides as a top pass-catching tight end. Petrovich set career highs in catches (4) and yards (79) against Shippensburg. It was the most catches by a Marauder tight end since Greg Frantz's four against IUP in 2009. His 79 yards were the most by a Millersville tight end in more than 10 years.
BY LAND AND BY AIR
•
Brent Collins totaled 123 yards receiving and
Ian Sadon totaled 106 yards rushing in week two at Mercyhurst. It was only the third time since the start of the 2009 season that Millersville has produced a 100-yard receiver and 100-yard rusher in the same game. Millersville performed the feat only against Cal in 2012 and Lock Haven in 2010.
COLLINS CATCHING ON
•
Brent Collins made his mark in 2011, catching 25 passes for the most receptions by a Marauder rookie since 2002. He made only five catches in 2012, though. He eclipsed that total in week one with a career-high seven catches. He set a new career-high in week two with 11 catches. His 123 yards receiving also set a new career high and marked his first 100-yard game. Game-by-game box scores have been filed since 2002 and no Marauder since then has caught more than 18 passes in the first two weeks of the season.
• He made a 42-yard catch against West Chester, which was Millersville's longest play from scrimmage at the time. He also had a 38-yard catch at Mercyhurst.
• Collins caught seven more passes against Bloomsburg, bringing his season total to 29, which ranks 13th in the PSAC.
SHARE THE LOAD
• Millersville quarterbacks have used a variety of options in the passing game through two weeks. 14 different players have caught at least one pass and nine different players have caught five or more. Seven different players have a reception of at least 20 yards.
QUITE A CATCH
• To get some perspective on how inexperienced the Millersville offense is, just look at the career receiving numbers. Through only seven games, 12 of the 14 players that have caught a pass have already set career-highs for receptions. The only exceptions are
Dominic Sanders and
Shane Doughty, and both players have missed games with injuries. Those 12 players entered the season with a combined 37 career catches, and 30 of those belonged to
Brent Collins.
SADON STRONG
•
Ian Sadon has eclipsed the 100-yard mark three times in the 2013 season, totaling 124 yards against IUP, 108 at Mercyhurst and 134 at Cheyney, giving him five, 100-yard games in a 10-game stretch.
• The 134 yards against Cheney came within four of his career high, and his 108 yards at Mercyhurst came on 21 carries--the second-highest total of his career.
• Sadon's 40-yard run against IUP was the longest by any Marauder this season and the second longest run of his career. He has four runs of 20-plus yards this season.
• Last season, he produced 100-yard games against LIU Post and California (Pa.), and scored five touchdowns including three against Cal.
• Sadon has carried the ball more than 20 times four times in his career and each time he has recorded at least 100 yards.
• Sadon is on pace to rush for 844 yards on 189 carries this season. The last Marauder to rush for more than 800 yards in a season was Brad Lantz in 2007. Sadon is also on pace to have the most carries since Lantz's 234 in 2007.
WHAT A DEBUT
•Â
Dante Barkley made eight catches for 84 yards against LIU Post in week one. The eight grabs were the most by a Marauder freshman since Omar Sanders caught nine against Bloomsburg in 2003.
YEAR ONE A CHALLENGE
• Breitbach is one of four new head coaches in the PSAC, and the 12 returning coaches went just 52-72-2 in their first seasons. Only half of that number posted records above .500. No first-year Millersville coach has posted a winning first season since 1923.
• The four new PSAC coaches have a combined 9-19 record through seven weeks, and Bloomsburg's Paul Darragh is 7-0.
NO FAVORS WITH THE SCHEDULE
• Of Millersville's first six opponents, two (Bloomsburg and West Chester) are ranked in the top 15. Millersville's first six opponents have a combined record of 33-11 and only one team has a sub-.500 record.
• Three of Millersville's opponents were ranked in the preseason top-25 and two others received votes. Three teams (Shippensburg, Bloomsburg and IUP) reached the NCAA Playoffs last year. Millersville's PSAC West opponents finished 1-2-3 in the standings in 2012 and went a combined 29-7.
