Millersville, Pa. - The Millersville women's soccer team battled with Bloomsburg for 90 minutes on Wednesday night but came up just short in a 1-0 loss.
Millersville (6-6-1, 5-5-1 PSAC) took nine shots in the game and limited Bloomsburg (6-8, 4-8 PSAC) to just six attempts. The Marauders held a 5-4 edge in shots on goal and both teams forced six corner kicks in the game.
The lone score of the match came in the 61st minute. Bloomsburg's Jenna Fisher had a breakaway opportunity but her shot was thwarted by Millersville keeper Olivia Webber. Webber could not contain the point blank target and the rebound fell right to the feet of a trailing Ashley Sanchez. Sanchez immediately placed a shot into the open goal and gave the visitors a 1-0 lead with 30 minutes to play.
The Black and Gold created many threatening chances, but each time the Bloomsburg defense did just enough to keep the home team out of the goal cage.
One of Millersville's most dangerous opportunities came in the first half. Savannah Hall took a free kick from 30 yards out and rifled a shot towards the goal. Her aim was slightly off as the ball blistered right past the left post.
Hall and Megan Wilson led the Marauders with two shots each and Webber made three saves in the game.
The 1-0 shutout marks just the third time that the women's soccer team has been held without a score this season. The home loss is only Millersville's fourth loss on Chryst Field at Biemsderfer Stadium over the past two years.
The Marauders will regroup and travel to Lock Haven this Saturday to take on the Bald Eagles. First touch is slated for 7:30 p.m.
