Bloomsburg Storms Back to Beat Marauders in OT

Box Score Millersville, Pa. - Through 88 minutes of play the Millersville men's soccer team controlled the tempo and pace of the game against Bloomsburg. However, in the waning seconds of regulation the Huskies tied the game and then scored a golden goal in overtime to defeat the Marauders 2-1 on Wednesday evening.

With 1:20 left in regulation, Bloomsburg's (5-8-1, 3-4-1 PSAC) Matt Cannon scored on a loose ball off of a corner to tie the contest at one goal apiece. Then four minutes into overtime the Huskies leading scorer Fran Miller collected a cross and barely beat Millersville (7-4-1, 4-2 PSAC) keeper Zechariah Kruger to the lower left corner of the goal for the game-winner in the 95th minute.

After a relatively insignificant first half, Marauder senior Andrew Dukes broke a scoreless tie in the 51st minute. Sophomore Jaime Vazquez dribbled the ball into the box and near the right baseline. The midfielder played a centering, touch pass and Dukes one-timed his shot into the back of the net to give the home team a 1-0 advantage early in the second half.

Millersville continued to dominate play throughout the rest of the second half and looked like they would cruise to their fifth conference victory before the Huskies late game dramatics flipped the script.

The Black and Gold took six more shots than their opponent (14-8) and limited Bloomsburg to just two corners, while totaling six corner kicks of their own.

Vazquez led the Marauders with six shots, and Kruger made five saves in his first start in goal this season.

The loss to Bloomsburg is head coach Steve Widdowson's first blemish against the Huskies. Prior to Wednesday's game Widdowson had been 11-0 against Bloomsburg and had outscored the Huskies 24-3 in those meetings.

Millersville looks to get back on track on Saturday when the travel to Lock Haven to take on the Bald Eagles. Game time is 5 p.m.
