GAME NOTES
· Millersville got a big win Saturday at home against Kutztown, 78-56. Entering the contest, the Marauders and Golden Bears were tied for second place in the PSAC East, and with a win and a Bloomsburg loss at home to West Chester, Millersville finds itself in a tie for first place in the division with a team it has already defeated once this season. Against the Golden Bears, four Marauder players scored in double figures, including leading scorer
Aurielle Mosley, who posted her second consecutive 20-point performance. For Mosley, it was also her fifth double-double of the year as she yanked down a game-high 13 rebounds. Millersville trailed by two at halftime, but went on a 24-6 run in the first 9:55 of the second half to cruise past the Golden Bears on its home floor. The Marauder senior forward's efforts over the past two games were enough to net her the fourth PSAC East Athlete of the Week award she has taken home this season.
· Millersville-Shippensburg is another big game for the Marauders, as the road team can use Wednesday's game to put even more space between itself and the teams directly below it in the standings. The Raiders are tied with Kutztown for second place in the PSAC East, just one divisional game behind Millersville and Bloomsburg.
· One player that will be critical to the Marauders getting a win Wednesday at Shippensburg is
Mashira Newman. The redshirt senior point guard has been a thief in the past two games, picking opponents pockets a combined 16 times against East Stroudsburg and Kutztown, including a single-game record 11 against the Warriors last Wednesday. The total of 16 steals matches Newman's best two-game output of her career, evening the total she set in back-to-back games against ESU and West Chester on Feb. 16 and 19, 2011. The PSAC's leader in steals per game has also been particularly good against Shippensburg in her career, averaging 15.3 points per game against the Raiders, including a career-best 30 points in a Feb. 23, 2011 70-56 win over Ship at home.
· Seventeen games into the season, the Marauders continue to boast a lethal all-around game against their opponents. Millersville is only one of two PSAC teams to rank in the top five in the conference in both scoring offense (3rd, 71.4 points per game) and scoring defense (5th, 59.8 points per game). The only other team to sit in the top five in both categories is PSAC East foe Bloomsburg. Wednesday's opponent Shippensburg just misses the cut, posting the fifth-best scoring offense in the league (70.6 points) and the sixth-lowest points allowed per game at 61.7.
· Mosley has had a solid season rebounding the ball with six double-digit rebounding games to her credit in 2012-13, and is already in the top five of the record books for rebounds in a career. At 880 career boards, the redshirt senior forward from York already ranks third in school history and has her sights set on one of the team's assistant coaches,
Darlene Newman, for third place all-time in school history. Newman is just 26 rebounds ahead of Mosley for third on the all-time list. At her current pace of 8.2 per game, the Central York High School product will pass her coach on Feb. 9 at home against West Chester. First place may be out of reach, as Kristy Garner's school record of 1,005 would force Mosley to maintain a rate of 13.9 rebounds per game through the end of the year.
ABOUT SHIPPENSBURG
· Shippensburg hosts Millersville Wednesday at home at Heige's Fieldhouse in a tie for second place in the PSAC East, looking up at the Marauders in a one-game hole. A year after finishing 14-13 and just 11-11 in league play, head coach Kristy Trn has this Raiders team headed for a better finish in 2012-13. Trn has been the head coach of Ship for the past 13 seasons and is guiding the team through her 14th this year. The winningest head coach in program history, Trn owns a career record of 221-149 and 96-76 in divisional games, bringing stability to the team. She was also a two-time PSAC West Coach of the Year on the sidelines of her alma mater.
· This year, Ship has been solid and has won three in a row as well as four of its past five. The one loss was a 30-point defeat (70-40) at the hands of Bloomsburg on the road on Jan. 16. The Raiders have not lost since that game, dropping Mansfield, West Chester and East Stroudsburg in succession by an average of 21 points per game. The team's most impressive win in that stretch has to be a 20-point trouncing of the Golden Rams last Wednesday, the same West Chester team that has gotten victories over co-division leaders Millersville and Kutztown in the past two weeks. The Golden Rams jumped out to a 12-point lead in that game before Ship rallied late in the first half and ran West Chester off the floor in the second half.
· The Raiders have the PSAC's fifth-best offense for a reason, as they boast a balanced scoring attack that has four players in double figures each game. Sarah Strybuc is fourth in the PSAC in scoring and leads the team with 14.5 points per game. She is the team's floor-stretcher and has made 46 of her 136 3-point attempts so far this season, good for a 33.8 shooting percentage from deep.
· Despite the fact that Strybuc has been the team's highest scorer, the team's best all-around player is Stephanie Knauer, who also is second in the conference in rebounding at 9.4 boards per contest. Knauer comes in at second on the team and 10th in the conference in scoring average, putting up a 12.4 point per game rate.
· The other two players who score in double figures for the Raiders are the Wert sisters. Dana Wert averages 11.6 points per game, while Shawna Wert trails her sister by just one-tenth of a point, coming in at an 11.5 point per game pace. Dana leads the team in assists at 4.2 helpers per game.
· While the Raiders do have the sixth-best scoring defense in the conference, Ship has more of a lockdown defense and does steal the ball or block shots very well. The Raiders rank next-to-last in the conference in both blocks per game (1.94) and steals per game (8.83). Conversely, Wednesday's visitors to Heige's Fieldhouse are the top-ranked team in the league in both categories. However, just because the Raiders have their deficiencies in steals and blocked shots does not mean they don't force opponents to turn the ball over or take bad shots; Ship ranks fifth in opponent turnovers per game (22.2) and sixth in opponent field goal percentage (37.1 percent).
