THE STARTING FIVE
(1) The Marauders dropped their most recent game Saturday at West Chester by a 94-78 score. It was the team's largest margin of defeat so far in the 2012-13 campaign. In the game, freshman guard Celeste Robinson recorded her first career double-double, scoring 14 points and pulling down a career-high 11 rebounds. Robinson played a team- and career-high 38 minutes against the Golden Rams. Junior guard Senada Mehmedovic gave the team scoring punch off the bench, going for 18 points on 6-of-15 shooting. Even though the Marauders had four players in double-figure scoring, the team couldn't overcome a West Chester squad that saw seven players score at least eight points led by Brittany Sicinski's 20.
(2) January has not been as kind to the Marauders as November and December were. During the first two months of the season, Millersville was a combined 7-2 (4-1 PSAC). Since the turn of the New Year, the team has gone just 3-3 in six games, all against PSAC opponents. While the slip has caused the Marauders to fall to a tie-for-second in the PSAC East for the first time this year, the rest of the team's 11 games are still against only divisional opponents, allowing the team to recover from a 3-3 start to 2013. As for the division standings, Millersville currently sits in a tie for second. The team had not been anywhere but first or in a tie for first place at any point this season until its most recent loss.
(3) Even as the team has slipped a bit in January, Robinson continues to impress in her rookie season. After her big performance at West Chester and an eight-point, six-rebound outing last Wednesday against Cheyney at home, the Kregsville native now posts averages for the season of 7.4 points per game, 4.5 rebounds per game, 2.5 steals per game and 2.3 assists per game and has won a PSAC East Freshman of the Week award.
(4) In the wake of a tough loss Saturday at the hands of the Golden Rams, Millersville can take solace in knowing that Fleig's teams have been extremely good in her career against East Stroudsburg. She owns a 34-11 career record against the Warriors and, prior to last year's loss at East Stroudsburg on Feb. 15, the Marauders had won 10-straight games in the head-to-head series. However, the team is just 18-13 all-time at East Stroudsburg, and eight of Fleig's 11 losses to the Warriors have come on the road. She owns a 14-8 record at East Stroudsburg in her tenure.
(5) It will be a homecoming of sorts for guard Carly Gallagher. The redshirt sophomore grew up in East Stroudsburg and attended East Stroudsburg South High School before spurning her hometown college and attending Millersville. Gallagher has been a good steal for the Marauders, as she averages 11.6 points per game, 3.2 rebounds per game and 2.3 assists per game so far in 2012-13. She leads the team from the line with a 73.8 percent clip at the charity stripe.
ABOUT EAST STROUDSBURG
· East Stroudsburg enters Wednesday night's game sitting at fifth place in the PSAC East with a 5-10 record overall and a 4-7 record in conference play. But the Warriors are hitting the 10-5 Marauders at the wrong time, as the home team has dropped five of its past six games, all against PSAC opponents. Before the current stretch, East Stroudsburg was sitting at 4-4 and 3-2 in PSAC action.
· Even with the recent struggles, the Warriors are able to crack down and defend Koehler Fieldhouse, posting a 3-3 record at home versus just 2-7 away from their own friendly confines. They were also able to take one out of two games while hosting the Pocono Classic at home with a 70-55 win over Caldwell. Further, ESU has been able to defeat one of the only teams in the conference that Millersville has yet to play, Mansfield. The Warriors took care of the Mountaineers with a 66-59 road win on Jan. 16 to snap a four-game skid.
· The Warriors, which claim just the 13th-best offense in the PSAC, score 58.8 points per game while allowing 63.9 points per game, good for the league's 10th-ranked defense. The offensive struggles for ESU are hard to figure, particularly when considering that it makes 3-pointers at the sixth-best rate in the PSAC at 30.8 percent. One culprit for the offensive woes is turnovers, as the Warriors rank 8th in the conference in terms of giveaways, turning the ball over at an average rate of 20.3 per game.
· ESU has only one player in double figures who leads the offense, Jessica Martin. Martin posts 11.9 points per game as well as 8.5 rebounds per game, which also leads the team. She has four double-doubles so far in 2012-13, including a 15-15 performance in her most recent game against Kutztown. Martin can also give Millersville problems when the Warriors transition to the defensive end of the court. She leads the team with 26 blocks on the year and has 21 steals, ranking second on the team to only Helena Gemmell, who has 26 steals of her own.
· The team's offense is facilitated through Ryann Fiascki, who notches 8.1 points per game and adds a team-best 2.9 assists per game. Millersville should be also be cautious with sending Fiascki to the line, as she makes free throws at the best rate on the team with an 88.5 percent clip from the line. One other player the Marauders need to keep tabs on defensively is Andrea Veres, who averages the second-most points on the team at 9.7 and has attempted 83 3-pointers on the year.
