THE STARTING FIVE
(1) Millersville enters Wednesday night's battle with Cheyney on the heels of arguably the team's strongest win of the year, a victory over No. 16 Indiana (Pa.) last Saturday. That win came on the back end of a tough two-game road swing out West, as the Marauders took on California (Pa.) Friday night, dropping that game 67-64. Against 16th-ranked IUP, guard
Carly Gallagher got white-hot in the second half, knocking down all four of her 3-point attempts in the second half to account for all 15 of her points in the game during the second stanza. While Gallagher did the damage from deep against the Crimson Hawks, senior point guard
Mashira Newman finished IUP at the line, nailing five free throws in the final minute to seal the victory. The night before against the Vulcans, four Marauders scored in double figures. Gallagher just nearly missed her first career double-double, scoring 12 points to go along with a career-high nine rebounds.
(2) Marauder head coach
Mary Fleig has owned Cheyney in her career. Fleig has seen the Wolves 45 times since taking over before the 1990-91 season, and has won 43 of those 45 meetings. More impressive is the fact that Fleig lost the first encounter with the Wolves. The only other loss suffered by Fleig at the hands of Cheyney came in 2010, when Marilyn Stephens was in her second year as head coach of Cheyney. It accounts for her only win in eight meetings with Fleig. Prior to the Wolves' win in 2010, the Marauders had been on a 38-game winning streak against their PSAC East foe in the all-time series.
(3) The home team for Wednesday night, Millersville's biggest flaw this season has come at the free throw line, where the team shoots a PSAC-worst 60.3 percent from the charity stripe. However, positive signs have come from two of the senior leaders on the team in recent games: forward
Aurielle Mosley has made 12 consecutive free throws dating back to the Missouri S&T game at the Bellarmine Tournament on Dec. 31, 2012, and Newman made five of her six free throws when they mattered most against IUP Saturday, closing out the Crimson Hawks in style.
(4) The IUP game on Saturday officially marked the team's midpoint of its 2012-13 season. After 13 games, the Marauders sit at first place in the PSAC East division standings with a 9-4 (6-3 PSAC) record to their credit. Millersville can take comfort in knowing it is already ahead of last year's pace, as the team had gone 8-5 through its first 13 games of the 2011-12 season. There are 13 games left on this year's schedule, and every single game from here to the end of the season counts equally, as those 13 games are all against PSAC East opponents. The only East rival the Marauders have already played was Bloomsburg, which was ranked 16th nationally when the teams met on Dec. 8. Millersville got the better of that meeting, winning 62-55.
(5) Aside from Mosley and Newman, the tandem that has gotten all the press this year, junior guard
Senada Mehmedovic has a little streak going of her own. Mehmedovic has knocked down a 3-pointer in every single game so far this season, hitting on 35 percent of her 3-point attempts for the year. Her threes have been timely as well; over the weekend, she hit two in each game to carry the offense through scoring droughts at the end of each game's first half.
ABOUT CHEYNEY
· Cheyney enters Wednesday night's matchup reeling, with an 0-12 record overall and sitting at 0-9 in conference play. Furthermore, the Wolves haven't had an answer for the Marauders the past five times these teams have met, dropping five straight games dating to the 2009-10 season by an average of 21.8 points per game.
· Stephens is doing her best to return a Wolves program to prominence, as her team appeared in the PSAC Tournament following her first season as head coach in 2008-09. The program, however, has fallen on tough times, as the team has not managed a win since beating East Stroudsburg on Feb. 5, 2011, 74-66. With the 12 losses already this season, the Wolves' current losing streak sits 44 games. Interestingly enough, the Marauders were the ones to begin Cheyney's long losing streak, besting the Wolves on Feb. 9, 2011 by a score of 79-49.
· The Wolves' offense, which averages a PSAC-worst 45.8 points per game, is led by Kyra Hines-Allen, the only Cheyney player to average double-digit scoring at a 10.7 point per game pace. Despite the scoring woes, Hines-Allen has been scoring in bunches lately, turning in a four-game average of 19.3 points per game. Before the recent hot streak, her scoring average stood at just 5.9 points per game, but she has nearly doubled it with four impressive performances.
· During that span for Hines-Allen, she is certainly getting her fair share of the offense, averaging 12.3 field goal attempts per game. But even more eye-popping is the rate at which she is getting to the free throw line, as she has attempted 12 free throws per game in her last four outings. The uptick in scoring coincides with more playing time, as she was given a career-high 26 minutes gainst Lock Haven on Jan. 4 and made the most of her opportunity. Since that game, she has played 30, 39 and 33 minutes, respectively.
· Another player the Marauders are going to have to keep their eyes on is Tamara Russell. Second on the team in scoring, Russell posts an 8.2 point per game pace. She also leads the team in rebounding, assists and steals, pulling down 5.4 boards per contest and dishing out 1.5 helpers per game. Her 22 steals are the most on the team so far this season.
· For all the Wolves' shortcomings, one thing they do better than their opponents is shoot free throws. Cheyney makes 67.3 percent of its attempts at the free throw line each game, while opponents shoot just 64.4 percent when playing against the Wolves. To have a chance at knocking off the Marauders, they'll hope Millersville can shoot its usual average on free throw attempts at Pucillo Gymnasium.
· Cheyney also makes its mark by forcing opponents into mistakes, as the opposing team turns the ball over 21.6 times per game against the Wolves. That rate is good for the seventh-best in the PSAC. However, the Wolves will have their hands full with Millersville in that same regard. The Marauders force the most turnovers in the PSAC at 24.5 opponent turnovers per game. Count that against Cheyney's PSAC-worst rate of 28.8 team turnovers per game, and it could spell trouble for Wednesday night's road team.
