California, Pa. – The Marauders' women's soccer team held an early lead against No. 20 California (Pa.), but the Vulcans scored five straight goals to defeat Millersville 5-1 on Wednesday night.
Millersville (3-3, 1-3 PSAC) got an early goal from leading scorer Kristen Lepley in the 11th minute. California (Pa.) (5-1, 3-0 PSAC) countered with three goals over the next 14 minutes to go up 3-1 only 25 minutes into the game. The Vulcans added another score before the end of the half and one more in the second half to end the game with a 5-1 win. Kelsey Russo (2), Erin Hogan, Haley Henderson and Bethany Smyda all scored for California (Pa.) in the PSAC contest.
Coming off of a three goal performance against Mansfield, Lepley tallied the first goal of the game, and It was only the second goal that the Vulcans had given up all year. The Marauders lead was not long lived.
In the 14th minute Russo took a pass from Henderson and evened the game at 1-1. Six minutes later, Hogan would scored an unassisted goal, and eventual game-winner, to give California (Pa.) a one goal lead. Less than five minutes after Hogan's score, Henderson beat Marauder keeper Olivia Webber to put the Vulcans up 3-1. Smyda and Russo finished the scoring for the Vulcans leading to Millersville's 5-1 loss.
Weber and fellow Marauder keeper Erica Roth each notched three saves in the game for the Marauders.
Millersville attempts to rebound from this loss and pick up their second PSAC win of the season when they return home to face conference foe Shippensburg on Saturday Sept. 22 at 5 p.m.
