Wilmington, Del. - Millersville and Wilmington battled back-and-forth for seven innings Tuesday, and it wasn't until the bottom of the seventh that Wilmington, taking advantage of a Marauder error, took a 6-5 lead and eventually the win.
The loss was Millersville's (16-15) ninth one-run loss of the season. The Marauders out-hit Wilmington 9-8, and the homestanding Wildcats committed four errors. Millersville, however, managed to take advantage of just one of those errors.
The Marauders jumped on the board with three runs in the second, but the Wildcats answered with three of their own in the bottom of the inning off of starter
Mark Royer. Millersville handed the ball to
Pat Kelley in the fourth, and Wilmington immediately took a 5-3 lead on two hits and a walk.
Millersville chipped into the lead in the fifth, scoring a run off of an error. In the seventh, the Marauders tied the game on a RBI single from
Zach Stone.
With the score knotted at 5-5 in the seventh, Kelley walked Wilmington's leadoff batter, and the Marauders to to
Adam Zipko. Wilmington bunted the runner into scoring position, and he advanced to third on a wild pitch. That runner eventually scored on a fielder's choice, and it proved to be the game-winner.
Millersville had opportunities to erase the deficit in the eighth and ninth innings. In the eighth,
Tyler McDonald singled with two outs but the team could not score him. In the ninth,
Evan King walked and Stone singled with two outs, but the tying run was stranded at second.
Kelley (1-1) took the loss for the Marauders. Wilmington used six different pitchers in the game, none of which threw more than two innings.
Stone led Millersville at the plate with two hits and a RBI.
Chris Edgar recorded two hits, King walked twice and went 1-for-3 with a RBI.
Millersville hosts Mansfield in an important PSAC East doubleheader Friday at Marauder Park. First pitch for game one is at 1 p.m.
