Marauders Take Game One; Play to 13-Inning Tie in Game Two

Game 1 | Game 2

Millersville, Pa. – It took almost 13 full innings before darkness and an approaching thunderstorm forced game two to end in a 6-6 tie. Millersville had a man on first and second and just one out in the bottom of the 13th. The Marauders, however, took game one by a final score of 4-2.

Game two heated up in the sixth inning with East Stroudsburg (24-17-1, 8-11-1 PSAC East) erupting for six runs with two outs to take its first lead of the game at 6-4. Millersville (24-20-1, 12-11-1 PSAC East) entered the sixth inning with a 4-2 advantage.

The Marauders showed resilience in the bottom half of the sixth. With one out Evan King earned his first walk of the game giving Mike August a base runner to drive in. That is exactly what he did.

August roped a 2-0 fastball down the right field line scoring King from first base. The ball traveled all the way to the corner allowing August to slide in for a triple. A throwing error by the cutoff man sent the ball toward the left foul-line fence scoring August to tie the game at 6-6. The Warriors got out of the inning with back-to-back groundouts.

The Warriors led off the seventh inning with a walk and a double to give ESU two runners in scoring position and no outs. Senior left-hander Jason Long, who came in for the final out in the sixth, put himself in a tough position. An intentional walk loaded the bases for the Warriors.

Long got the next batter to pop out to first base on just one pitch to get out number one. Then Long turned into the set up man Millersville saw during the Marauders' playoff run a season ago. Long froze the next two batters with 1-2 sliders, striking them both out looking to retire the side and keep the game knotted at 6-6.

Millersville went three up, three down to push the game to extra innings.

The game went through six and a half scoreless innings before it came to the bottom of the 13th. Ryan Chesler, who entered the game in the ninth inning to catch, led off the inning with a double off the fence in left-center field. The hit resembled the walk-off home run against Bloomsburg last season by Chesler. A strikeout and an Evan King walk later gave the Marauders a runner on first and second with one out and August coming to the plate. And then the umpires called the game due to darkness causing a 6-6 tie.

Game two starter Tim Mayza finished the game with five strikeouts and two hits in 5.2 innings of work. Long came in for 3.1 innings of work and collected five strikeouts. Tyler Horst pitched the last four innings with five strikeouts, including three inning ending strikeouts.

Millersville opened game one with two runs on two hits for an early 2-0 lead. Dan Johnson hit a two-out double driving home Zach Stone, who walked, for the game's first run. Kurt Seiders, who went 5-for-9 on the day, then drove Johnson home on single.

East Stroudsburg found a run in the second inning to cut the Marauders' lead to 2-1.

The Marauders rallied for two more runs in the third. Johnson led off the inning with a 3-2 walk and then advanced to second on a first-pitch single by Seiders. Chris Edgar continued the on-base streak with an RBI single scoring Johnson.

With Seiders on third and Edgar on second, Tyler McDonald hit a sacrifice fly to center field to extend Millersville's lead to 4-1.

The Warriors responded again with another run in the fourth but that was all they could find.

Brian Black (3-5) earned his third win of the season with 5.1 innings of work. Horst came in the seventh inning and struck out two batters to earn his second save, sixth of the season, in as many games to give the Marauders a 4-2 game-one victory.

The Marauders, who finished their conference play, will have to wait and see the outcome of the Bloomsburg, West Chester series next weekend to determine if they will be playoff bound. Millersville will likely need the Golden Rams to take 3-of-4 for a chance to make the PSAC Tournament in Butler, Pa.

Millersville's nine-inning game at USciences tomorrow was canceled due to field constructions. The Marauders will host Wilmington (Del.) on Tuesday, April 24 at Marauder Park in a nine-inning affair starting at 3 p.m.

The Marauders recognized its eight seniors prior to today's contest. August, Edgar, Horst, Long, Mike McMonagle, Carlos Medina, Mike Perez and Brooks Rothschild all played their final regular season conference games. Pictures from the ceremony will be available on www.millersvilleathletics.com later this next week.
