Game 2
West Chester, Pa. - The momentum Millersville gained from a final at-bat victory Friday kept rolling Saturday at Serpico Stadium against No. 5 West Chester. Millersville scored its first road sweep of the season and pulled itself even in PSAC East play with wins of 12-6 and 3-2.
For the second season in a row, Millersville (22-17, 10-10 PSAC East) swept West Chester (26-6, 11-5 PSAC East) at Serpico Stadium, and it is the first time ever that Millersville has won four consecutive games at West Chester. The Marauders performed the feat by combining a red-hot offense with stellar starting pitching.
In the two games combined, six different Marauders had at least one RBI and five different players had at least two.
Evan King produced an outstanding day at the plate, going 6-for-10, and
Kurt Seiders went 4-for-8.
King, Seiders and
Jeff Heisey were the spark plugs for the Marauders in game one. King recorded a season-high four hits and drove in three runs. Seiders went 3-for-5 with three runs and two RBIs. Heisey matched a career-high with four RBIs on three hits. The 12 runs scored were five more than any other team had scored against West Chester this season.
The scoring got started in the second when King doubled home
David Pine. West Chester tied it in the bottom of the inning off of Marauder starter
Brian Black (2-5), but Millersville wouldn't take long before opening a sizable lead.
After RBIs from Heisey and
Mike August in the fourth, Millersville struck for two more in the fifth on a RBI bunt from Heisey and a throwing error on West Chester.
Millersville gave Black a 9-2 lead with a four-run sixth that included a two-run single from King and RBI singles from
Chris Edgar and Seiders. The runs kept coming in the seventh when Seiders tripled in a run and Heisey added two more with a double.
Black worked into the seventh but surrendered four runs in West Chester's final at bat.
Jason Long entered in relief and despite giving up a two-run single and a run on a wild pitch, he closed the door before West Chester could rally any further.
The 18 hits were the most by Millersville against a PSAC East opponent since totaling 23 against Mansfield on April 17, 2008.
Millersville totaled 11 more hits in the nightcap, but runs weren't as easy to come by. The Marauders struck early with King starting the charge once again. His leadoff single and steal of second in the top of the first set up a RBI double from
Dan Johnson. Edgar led off the second with a solo blast to right field, and August singled home
Tyler McDonald to boost the lead to 3-0.
Working with the lead,
Tim Mayza (3-2) was brilliant. He allowed only two hits through the first four innings and escaped a jam in the fifth, allowing only one run and stranding two Golden Rams. Joe Wendle cut Millersville's lead to one with a solo homer to lead off the sixth.
Adam Zipko entered in relief a Mayza and picked up the two outs he needed to get out of the inning.
Tyler Horst entered in the seventh and breezed through the three Golden Ram hitters he faced, striking out two of them for his fourth save of the season.
King, August, McDonald and
Zach Stone all recorded two hits for Millersville.
West Chester entered the weekend as the PSAC's top-hitting team, but Millersville out-hit the Golden Rams 29-14 Saturday and 45-23 over the four-game series. Millersville's pitching staff also held West Chester to two runs in three of the four games. West Chester entered the series averaging 8.9 runs per game.
The series win coupled with East Stroudsburg's 3-1 series win over Kutztown significantly muddied the PSAC East playoff race. Millersville plays East Stroudsburg in its final league series of the season next weekend. The Marauders first travel to Indiana (Pa.) for a doubleheader Sunday.
