Marauders Split Home Opener with Clarion

Game 1 | Game 2

Millersville, Pa. - Brooks Rothschild's strong effort in Friday's home opener against Clarion helped the Marauders to a 3-2 win. Brian Black was outstanding in game two but received no run support in a 1-0 loss.

Millersville (7-5) received six innings from Rothschild, who improved to 4-0 on the season and 17-3 in his three-year career. He wasn't sharp, walking six and allowing four hits, but he was effective, allowing just one run.

Rothschild was able to out-duel Brandon Slater (0-1), who went the distance for Clarion and struck out seven.

Clarion (1-3) scored a first-inning run, but the Marauders answered when Dan Johnson was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Millersville added another run in the third on a RBI single from Carlos Medina. Zach Stone's RBI double in the fifth gave the Marauders a 3-1 lead and proved to be a big run.

Tyler Horst came on to close in the seventh, but a Matt Rossi RBI groundout put the Golden Eagles within one. With the tying run 90 feet away, Horst recorded the final out with a strikeout.

Millersville's offense showed no sign of life until the final at bat. Mike Dunn (1-0) allowed just five base runners and struck out seven. Black (0-2) allowed four hits and walked none while striking out seven. He made just one mistake, though, and it was costly.

In the top of the third, left fielder Bill Hasson hit a homer to left center, giving Clarion a 1-0 advantage and the eventual win.

Clarion committed three errors, but Millersville could not capitalize. The only true threat came in the final at bat. Medina doubled down the third base line to put a runner in scoring position with one out. A wild pitch advanced pinch runner Mark Maiorano to third, and Ryan Cannistraci drew a walk to put runners at the corners with two outs. Dunn escaped the jam by getting Jeff Heisey to fly out on the first pitch of the at bat.

Millersville hosts the rubber game Saturday at 12 p.m. Fans can watch live on All-Access or listen live for free on MSBN.
