Game 1 |
Game 2
Millersville, Pa. - Tuesday was a record-breaking day at Marauder Park in more ways than one. Millersville rolled to a doubleheader sweep of Lincoln (Pa.) by scores of 19-0 and 14-0, but it was senior
Mark Royer's pitching performance in game two that will be remembered most. The southpaw fanned eight and walked none in a no-hit performance.
Royer (2-1) needed just 76 pitches and was just three over the minimum. His only hiccup was a hit batsmen in the second inning, and the Marauders (14-12) committed two errors behind him. But Royer was dominant with only one batter working three balls in a count. He needed only three pitches to get through the sixth inning. The no-hitter was not without drama, though. In the seventh,
Coach
Jon Shehan made a defensive change at first place, inserting
Ryan Chesler, who had not played the position this season. With one out, Maurice Brown hit a looping line drive toward Chesler, who scrambled toward the edge of the infield, left his feet and made the catch. Royer ended the no-hitter with a ground-out to shortstop. Royer's performance was even more incredible considering that he lasted a total of 4.1 innings in his previous two starts. It was the first no-hitter at Millersville since April 7, 2007 when Brett Rhoads beat Mansfield.
Royer's historic outing overshadowed a gem by
Tad Barton (2-1) in the opener. Barton threw a complete-game two-hitter, allowing one hit in the first and one in the seventh. He struck out a career-high 11 while walking one.
The two starters were certainly helped by the Millersville bats. The Marauder offense had averaged 2.2 runs over its recent five-game skid but broke out of its slump in a big way Tuesday. The 19 runs in the opener were the most ever scored at Marauder Park, and the 33 total runs were the most scored in a doubleheader since 1989 when Millersville beat Kutztown with totals of 24 and nine.
Millersville already led the opener 7-0 when the offense erupted in the sixth. Freshman
David Pine, who finished the game a home run shy of the cycle, tripled to right center. Pine later scored from third when
Mark Maiorano stole second. Lincoln had an opportunity to escape with just two runs allowed, but a fielding error extended the inning in a big way. Millersville went on to record 11 runs on six hits, and it was all capped by the second grand slam of
Zach Stone's career. The 12 runs were the most in a single inning in school history and tied the second-highest total in PSAC history.
Pine went 3-for-4 with three runs, Stone plated six runs on two hits, and
Tyler McDonald drove in three on two hits. Millersville totaled eight extra base hits in the game.
The hits kept coming in game two in support of Royer. Of Millersville's 17 hits, five were doubles. Seven different Marauders had at least two hits.
Chris Edgar led the way with a 3-for-4, three-run, two-RBI effort.
Kurt Seiders finished his day with four hits, three RBIs and a two doubles. McDonald totaled four hits, including two doubles, and drove in five runs.
Millersville looks to carry some momentum into a crucial PSAC East, weekend series with Kutztown, which starts Friday at Kutztown.
