Game 1 |
Game 2
Shippensburg, Pa. - Shippensburg struck early and often against Millersville Friday at Fairchild Field. Using scoring outbursts in the first inning of both games of the PSAC East doubleheader, the Red Raiders handed the Marauders two losses by scores of 5-2 and 7-4. It was the first time Millersville had been swept in both games of a doubleheader since April of 2010.
One constant for Millersville (12-10, 2-4 PSAC East) all season was the pitching of
Brooks Rothschild (5-1) and
Brian Black (0-4). Both entered Friday with ERA's under 2.00 in five appearances. But in the opener, Shippensburg (16-11, 3-3 PSAC East) tagged Rothschild for four runs in the first two innings, including three in the first to hand him his first loss of the season. It was just the fourth time in Rothschild's last 25 appearances that he allowed three or more runs. With 18 career wins, it was just the fourth loss of his career.
Ship's three-run first inning was an answer to Millersville's one in the top of the inning. The Marauders also picked up one in the second on
Chris Edgar's solo home run, but Ship answered right back with a RBI single from Jimmy Spanos. Millersville never scored again. The team managed just six hits and Edgar had three of them.
Black, the game two starter, had allowed just three earned runs in 22.0 innings enter Friday. Shippensburg chased him from the game after 3.1 innings, though, scoring one in the first and four more in the third. Black allowed five earned runs--seven total--on 10 hits. Jimmy Miller (4-1) went the distance, surrendering four runs--three earned--on 10 hits.
Millersville scored one run in the fourth, fifth and sixth.
Dan Johnson hit his second home run of the season, and after hitting a triple, he scored on a muffed relay from the outfield. Shippensburg committed four errors, but the Marauders could not take advantage.
Adam Zipko pitched 2.2 scoreless innings of relief. Edgar went 2-for-4 in game two to finish the day 5-for-7.
In an attempt to avoid weekend rain storms, Saturday's games at Marauder Park between Millersville and Shippensburg were moved up to 9 a.m.
