Game 2
Bloomsburg, Pa. - Millersville recorded 14 hits and cruised to an 8-2 win in the opening game of Saturday's doubleheader at Bloomsburg. The Marauders, however, surrendered and two-run lead and dropped a 3-2 decision in the series finale.
Millersville (12-8, 2-2 PSAC East) and Bloomsburg (10-8, 2-2 PSAC East) split the PSAC East-opening series at two games apiece, and of the last 12 games played between the clubs, eight have been decided by one run. It marks the first time that Millersville has not won at least three of four in a PSAC East series since April of 2010. Six of Millersville's eight losses this season have been by one run.
The Marauders received three hits from
Kurt Seiders,
Carlos Medina and
Jeff Heisey in the opener.
Dan Johnson and Medina each drove in two runs. Starter
Mike McMonagle (1-1), who was making his first start since allowing six runs in 0.2 innings vs. California (Pa.) two weeks ago, gave up one run in the first but quickly settled. The Millersville bats helped him in the third by scoring three runs on five hits.
Zach Stone plated Heisey with a single, and Johnson followed with a two-run double.
Bloomsburg picked up one in the third to bring Millersville's lead to 3-2, but McMonagle cruised the rest of the way. He allowed only two hits over his final four innings to finish his first complete game of the season.
Millersville added three more runs in the fifth on a RBI single from Seiders and a two run double from Medina. The lead grew in the seventh with a squeeze play executed by
Chris Edgar and Seiders, and a double from Heisey.
The runs didn't come nearly as easy for the Maruaders in game two. Bloomsburg starter Matt Kline and Marauder starter
Brian Black (0-3) were locked in a scoreless battle until the fifth. Millersville took a 2-0 lead when
Evan King doubled home Heisey, and August singled in King.
Black ended up as the tough-luck loser for the third time this season, though. In the bottom of the fifth, a leadoff single turned into a jam when the Jarrod Kramer reached on an error. Brad Smith followed with a two-run double, and he later scored on a wild pitch.
Trailing 3-2, the Marauders tried to rally in the seventh. Heisey reached with a leadoff walk and moved to third on a ground out and passed ball. But with the tying run 90 feet away and one out, Vinny Vorhees got the Marauders to ground out twice, ending the game.
Black has allowed just three earned runs and five total runs in 22.0 innings of work this season but is without a win. Millersville has given him three runs of support in his two starts.
King went 2-for-2 with a double, walk, RBI and run in the second game.
Millersville travels to Shippensburg for a pair on March 23.
