Game 2
Millersville, Pa. - Brooks Rothschild dominated Bloomsburg for a 2-1 Millersville win in Friday's PSAC East opener, but the Marauders dropped game two 5-4 despite a furious comeback in the final at bat.
Rothschild (5-0) threw his second complete game to stay unbeaten and improve to 18-3 in his career. He has not allowed more than one run in any of his five starts this season.
The only run that Rothschild allowed was a solo homer to Vince Smarelli that temporarily tied the game at 1-1. Millersville (11-7, 1-1 PSAC East) scored its first run in the bottom of the fourth on a RBI single from
Carlos Medina.
Evan King gave the Marauders a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fifth with a sacrifice fly.
Millersville managed just four hits--two from
Kurt Seiders. Bloomsburg, however, managed just two off of Rothschild.
Bloomsburg (9-7, 1-1 PSAC East) raced to a 5-0 lead in the nightcap, bouncing starter
Tim Mayza (1-1) after 4.1 innings. Mayza struck out six and walked one, scattered four hits and plunked two Huskies. Two of the runs came in the fifth when
Adam Zipko allowed in two inherited runners.
Millersville finally got on the board in the bottom of the fifth when
Mike August scored on a wild pitch. Starter Bryan Morris (3-1) cruised into the seventh but ran into trouble and couldn't escape the final inning. He walked
Mike Perez to lead off the inning, and August followed with a single.
Bloomsburg called on closer Geno D'Amato, but the Marauders continued to rally. Seiders drew a walk to load the bases.
Jeff Heisey was then hit by a pitch, putting the score at 5-2. King followed by drawing a walk, putting the winning run on first base with no outs.
D'Amato managed to strike out
Chris Edgar, but with the bases loaded,
Zach Stone hit a rising line drive to left center. Smarelli tracked down the fly but Seiders scored to pull Millersville to within one. The next batter,
Dan Johnson, smoked a D'Amato pitch that one-hopped into the glove of second baseman Aaron Russell, who quickly flipped it to the shortstop for the final out.
Millersville score three runs on just one hit in the inning and stranded two.
Millersville and Bloomsburg have now played seven one-run games in the last 10 meetings.
The two teams play a doubleheader at Bloomsburg Saturday.
